B. devastation and enslavement in the name of progress by which native peoples of the Western Hemisphere have been decimated.

C. devastating and enslaving in the name of progress those native peoples of the Western Hemisphere which in the name of progress are decimated.

D. devastating and enslaving those native peoples of the western Hemisphere which in the name of progress are decimated.

E. the devastation and enslavement in the name of progress that have decimated the native peoples of the Western Hemisphere.

这道题看糊涂了，答案也出现好几个，有A，B，E。。。

CD中做personify宾语用devastating and enslaving不如用名词devastation and enslavement好

E中对应name的动词应该用单数has

A中name of progress本身不能表达主动意思，所以动词应该用被动式

我觉得选E。我觉得应该是devastation and enslavement ->have decimated native peoples of the Western Hemisphere 不是 progress has decimated native peoples of the Western Hemisphere；另外personify 后面应该用名词还是动名词形式，我个人感觉这里用名词更恰当。

这个题目我简单说说好了

之前一直没有时间管

这个题目比较bt，但是并不难做

如果是我我会在30秒内选择A然后就不管它了

题目的意思其实是比较清楚地，就是对于很多xx的历史学家来书哦，CC同学已经成为了D和E的代名词，以XX的名义...

对比5个选项之后最容易排除的是CD两个选项，这两个选项中的which使用是不妥的，CD中的which in the name of progress are decimated是一个定语从句，这个定语从句往前修饰复数名词peoples，但是which作为非限定定语从句需要用逗号和前面的被修饰词隔开。这个问题属于句子结构问题，再此不表。

剩下的ABE三个选项容易排除的是E选项，E选项中that have decimatd ... 也是一个定语从句，这个定语从句存在一个主谓一致的问题，因为have决定了that所指代的被修饰词应该是一个复数名词，但是前面的progress, name 都是单数，或许有人会反驳说 the devastation and enslavement是复数，但是值得指出的是这里这两者是一个统一体仍然是单数，所以这个have的问题实际上是一个主谓一致的问题。排除E

剩下的AB两个选项就更容易判断了，AB两个选项前面的部分都一样，唯一的差别在最后的定语从句A为that has decimated native peoples of the Western Hemisphere B为by which native peoples of the Western Hemisphere have been decimated，这两句话的意思完全一样不过一个主动一个被动，相比之下主动语态更合适，所以选择A

可能有人会问AB两个选项最后定语从句的修饰关系，我也google了一下网络上对这个题目的讨论，大家都在讨论 X of Y that 这个结构中的that从句究竟是修饰X还是Y的。也有很多人提出质疑说本题目中 the name of progress，name前面有一个定冠词the，而progress前面没有the 所以后面的定语从句应该修饰name。这里我多解释一点，如果是纯粹的X of Y结构，那么的确是这样。但是这里的 in the name of是一个固定的词组，换句话说我们不需要对in the name of sth.的name做任何修饰，所以that从句会直接修饰后面的progress

多谢老詹，我在新东方上课的时候老师说that引导的定语从句要紧跟在被修饰的词的后面，中间不能加东西的，好像这样绝对了一点，但不知道对不对。

对于A，我的顾虑是that引导的定语从句到底是修饰progress，还是修饰the devastation and enslavement的，虽然这个引起的歧义并不大，所以我选了B

that引导的定语从句要紧跟在被修饰的词的后面这个太绝对了，英语是一种语言又不是一段代码哪能这么严。能紧跟固然好，不紧跟在不引起歧义的情况下也无所谓。话说你们教语法的老师是谁阿？

我现在最好奇的是你读这句话到底读出来个什么意思啊？

坦白地说我只能读一个大概意思，就说CC人格化了破坏和奴役，在一个命名的过程中，而这些造成了native people 的被decimate。然后在分析句子成分时候，并没有能力把这个意思代进去，在我看来progress和devastation and enslavement 都是可以decimate native peoples of the Western Hemisphere的。

那么我这么翻译一下或许你就更能理解了：

对许多修正主义的历史学家而言，克里斯托弗.哥伦布凭借其残害了西半球土著民族的（所谓的）“进步” 成为了毁灭和奴役的代名词。

我很同意你的说法 progress和D and E都可以去decimate peoples，但是对于这种印文表达 sb personify sth in the name of progress，如果后面那个从句修饰前面的D and E，你不觉得progress后面缺点东西么？赫赫
