耶鲁管理学院

 耶鲁管理学院（SOM）一直在进行着一场变革。SOM的好多改革都着眼于使之成为更传统的商学院。

　　学校在1976年成立时，大学官员就明确表明并不希望在Yale校园内出现另一个哈佛式的商学院，他们的设想蝇以全国最好的Yale law school为蓝本，使之成为商学院和School of public policy之间的学校。不幸的是，SOM并没能向那个理想靠扰，好多商界领导人甚至不知道Yale还有产学院。SOM认为提供更传统的MBA可能会改变学校在他们心目中的形象，这也是学生们多年来的要求。

　　90年代初，学院院长频换，就业办公室工作不得力，技术信息项目缺乏，学生的满意程度因而日降。SOM是Yale University里不被列为全美最好的学院的两个学院之一。1995年底新来院长本人也要经历从商界到学术界的转变。

　　不过，SOM也不是一无是处了，相反，这个学院仍有很多的优势：SOM在finance, general management 和ethics方面还是一流的；作为一所商学院，SOM非同寻常地多元化，因为重视public management, 学生就业于不同的职业圈子，15％的学生是African American, Latino或Native American; 1996年，申请者达创纪录的1805人，而1992年只有1216人，而申请者录取比例从1993年降到了23％；现任院长和Yale大学校长关系很好，他致力于加强SOM和Yale University其他学院的联系，把学院推向国内和国际商务界及提高学院的声誉。

　　现任院长获得过international studies专业博士学位，但没有学院行政管理经验，他曾在克林顿政府、华尔街和公共服务界任职，事业上有着辉煌的过去。与其前任不一样，他把日常工作交给代理校长，很少花时间和学生在一起，而自己主要从事外部联络。他的第一项改革方案就是大力改进就业服务工作。以前的一个学生休息大厅被分成好多间小屋，第一间都配备了电话、电脑以便于招聘者面试。以往招聘者们总是在各个教室里穿梭，很不方便。新开始实施为期两年的一系列的叫作Professional Strategies的workshop,讲解interview etiquette, job search strategies, math review和computer research skills等课题。学生们还开始能参加在Washington, New York, Greenwich, Boston和San Francisco的就业日，因为有些公司不愿到学校来。

　　教学规划是lecture占60％，case study占35％，在加上“real-world”project。第一年，学生修八门课和一门持续两个学期的Perspectives on Organization and Management。这门课请商务主管和顾问来校做报告，目的是为了在理论性的基础上加进一些现实社会的讨论。主课有：accounting, economics, statistics, organizational behavior, finance, game theory和marketing operations。一年级的学生还有一门必修叫Politics and Control in Business and Government。二年级学生要必修有一组教师教授的Analysis of Institutions和the energy industries。每个班都不超过35人，由来自不同学科的两位教师教授。此外，学生要上至少七门选修，包括选两门为深入研究某一领域所设的课，这些课有finance, marketing, strategy, public management或nonprofit management.。Marketing方面的课程一般都受到学生们的批评，据说学院会请好的老师来振兴这个领域的教学。

　　该校的教学情况、帮学生找暑期工作的情况和科技信息方面的设施都让学生们不满意，但ethics, diversity和leadership专业还排在前15名。学生认为finance, nonprofit和consulting strategies的教授是一流的。1994年，学校请来了Dartmouth的Tuck学校一名教授做金融系教授，他是学校里最受欢迎教授之一。

　　耶鲁商学院的历史非常短，其独树一帜的是它授予毕业生的学位叫做 MPPM（Master's Degree in Public and Private management），而不是一般的MBA，不同之处是它拥有一个培养公共行政及非赢利性机构和事业的管理人才的专业。

　　其中国研究很负盛名，商学院又开设很多有关"emerging markets"（即像中国这样正在转向市场经济和经济起飞阶段的国家）的课，且很重视吸引中国学生。

　　其强项有：Finance， business strategy， economics， public & non-profit management。

　　教学方式：课堂讲授60%，案例教学30%，实地项目10%。全年开设的选修课有62门。

　　每届学生有220人左右，学生的平均年龄比例比别的商学院要高，强调工作经验和个人成熟程度，重视学生背景的多样化，更愿接受来自政府及非商业的申请人。

美国耶鲁大学管理学院“史美伦奖学金”于2005年设立，前中国证监会副主席史美伦女士为该项奖学金捐赠70万美元。设立该项奖学金旨在为中国大陆的优秀MBA学生提供资助，培养中国亟需的金融人才。“史美伦奖学金”每两年一期，每期奖学金将为一名获奖学生提供MBA学业两年期间的全部费用。

史美伦本人早年曾留学美国，在维斯康辛大学获得文学学士学位，并在圣达嘉娜大学获法学博士学位。她曾历任香港证监会副主席、中国证监会副主席，以证券市场的监督管理见长。2004年10月，在卸任中国证监会副主席职务后，她被香港特区行政长官董建华委任为特区行政会议成员。

　　耶鲁管院是个很特殊的群体。关注商学院排名和特长比较的朋友会说，耶鲁最强的是“非营利组织”和“公共事业”的经营管理，这一点并不假，但只说对了一半。经过近20年来的不懈努力，尤其是在引进了数位金融领域的“大拿”级教授之后，耶鲁在华尔街的影响力近年来与日俱增，绝大多数顶级金融机构目前均在耶鲁做定期校园招聘。但是上面提到的两个方向的确是耶鲁管院区别于其他名校的一个重要指标，因为学院从招生取向，到课程设计，最后到职业规划等各个环节均非常重视吸收、培养并鼓励学生投身于公共事业，真正成为意义上的“商业及社会领袖”(管院的校训“Educating leaders for business and society”)。

　　“公共事业”是一个范围很广的概念，大到联合国、世界银行，小到民间的NGO(非政府组织)都在这个范畴之内。近些年来，政府或非政府的大型国际组织，社会企业(social enterprise)，大型企业的CSR部门(Corporate Social Responsibility“公司社会责任”)均是备受关注的MBA职业方向。一些曾就职于金融及咨询业的同学，不愿无休止地为“make the rich richer”(使富人更富)打工，而是要运用自己的专业技能做一些有社会意义的事业。

　　在耶鲁，我的身边就有一群这样执着于公共事业的同学，他们中有的以前是银行家和咨询师，也有的一直在公共事业领域打拼，希望在商学院提升技能后重返那片天地，甚至还有曾常驻伊拉克两年的特种部队女军官，希望带着她的一片赤诚之心进入一个与日常生活更为息息相关的社会公共领域，成为一名不一样的领袖。我带着极大的好奇采访了其中的两位，和大家一起分享他们的职业故事。

　　格莱格·罗森(Greg Rawson)

　　格莱格·罗森过去曾给三年级学生上课

　　这位被班上几乎所有女生公认为本年度全班第一帅哥的美国大男孩，有着纯净的微笑和极富亲和力的声音。来自中西部俄亥俄州的他，生得人高马大，至今仍是铁人三项业余运动员，举手投足间透出一股让人如沐春风的阳光健康气息。这些特质均和他之前的事业密不可分。本科毕业后，他加入了名为“Teach for America”的政府教育组织，在纽约布鲁克林区的低收入社区小学做了两年教师，之后的两年又加入了一家非营利性的教育咨询公司，专职为公立中小学设计教学改进方案，教师管理系统以及预算的编制实施等。

　　──为什么选择读商学院?
　　教育事业一直是我所热爱的，我喜欢和孩子们在一起的感觉，希望能帮助更多的孩子得到更好的教育。但是在供职教育咨询公司的两年里，我发现要实现这个目标单凭热情和投入是不够的，我需要更多的技能，尤其是商业经营管理的技能，来帮助我将来做更多的事。于是，我选择来耶鲁读MBA，因为我相信在这里我不但能学到最有用的知识，更能结识一群志同道合的朋友。事实也正是如此，在管院的“教育俱乐部(Education Club)”，我们级有10个坚定的会员，这对于一个只有223人的MBA班而言，已经是一个很惊人的数字了。

　　──未来的职业规划和目标?
　　我发现美国的公立中小学教育系统中存在两个致命的问题，一是僵化的“终身制”教师聘用体系，这个不符合现代社会发展要求的系统在强大的教师工会的庇护下严重制约着公立学校的教学质量;二是学校严重缺乏筹集及管理资金的能力和人才，这致使公立学校长期处于“贫困”状态，无法改进硬件设施，更何谈吸引高质量的教师(这也是为何政府会发起类似“Teach for America”这样公益组织的原因，通常优秀的大学毕业生愿意为他们工作一段时间，但不愿真正成为一名教师)。所以我的职业规划是进入联邦政府的教育管理部门或者逐渐成长为一个地区的教务长(superintendent)，用我一生的时间去改变这以现状，为低收入人群的下一代创造更好的教育环境。

　　亚历山德拉·麦纳尔(Alexandra Minor)
　　外表很酷但为人真诚的她是我在班中最好的朋友之一，我们亲切地称她是“山德拉”。山德拉在美国陆军服役5年，其中两年常驻伊拉克战场，是后勤供给部队的一名女军官。身材娇小的她身上却透出一种沉稳严谨的气质，让人感到很踏实，与她在同一个学习小组更是件幸福的事，因为言语不多的她总能默默地把分配给她的任务做到最好(这一点与许多能言善辩的美国同学很不同……)。

　　──为什么选择商学院?

　　在部队的5年里，我逐渐承担起更多的领导和管理工作，从中我发现，较之单纯意义上的军事事务，这是我更喜欢的事业。于是，我选择了退役，选择来到商学院，因为我相信严格的商业训练是帮助我从军队顺利过渡进入社会公共事业领域的必要条件，也是一条更稳妥的道路。我热爱部队的生活，但那毕竟是一种极端的政府行为，我希望我的事业能与普通人更紧密地联系在一起。

　　──未来的职业规划和目标?
　　说实话，也许是军队背景的缘故，在申请时我同时被哈佛和耶鲁录取了。但是最终选择来到耶鲁正是因为它在公共事业管理领域的传统优势。我自认很难成为一个真正意义上的“商业精英”，毕竟起步晚了，而且也志不在此。我想在毕业后加入政府的国际机构，诸如USAID，世界银行等，帮助他们管理运营大型国际项目，用更和平的方法改变世界。

　　我深深地被他们的话语打动，尤其是在周围的大部分同学正为第一轮投行和咨询公司暑期实习“海选”忙地不可开交。我现在明白，这个社会需要不同的领袖，华尔街的金融精英不可少，活跃在各行各业的咨询师不可少，可以为信仰放弃荣华富贵的社会领袖更不可少。于是，我想说，洗尽铅华之后，只要我们扪心自问，能说一句“我不后悔”，这就足够了。

　　记得，在“选择”这件事情上，没有孰是孰非。
