OG SC 137请教

137. Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples
of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim
while living, often goes into decline after death, and
never regains popularity again.
(A) often goes into decline after death, and never
regains popularity again
(B) whose reputation declines after death and never
regains its status again
(C) but whose reputation declines after death and
never regains its former status
(D) who declines in reputation after death and who
never regained popularity again
(E) then has declined in reputation after death and
never regained popularity
Verb tense; Parallelism
Faulty parallelism in the relative clause who
receives … goes … regains … makes it unclear who
or what is being described. Th e original clause
begins by describing a certain kind of composer.
As written, with who as the subject of goes and
regains, the last two descriptions illogically
continue to refer to the kind of composer.
Logically it must be the reputation that declines
after the composer’s death.
A Illogically suggests the composer goes into
decline after death; redundant again.
B Th e two clauses are not parallel, lack a
coordinating conjunction, and do not
describe the same thing; redundant again.
C Correct. Th is sentence presents the proper
logic while maintaining parallel structure
and consistent verb tense.
D Th e verb tenses are inconsistent with
present tense used in the first phrase;
redundant again.
E Th e verb tenses are inconsistent with present
tense used in the first phrase; to maintain
parallelism, the verbs must be receives …
declines … regains.
Th e correct answer is C.

B的解释说lack a coordinating conjunction, 是为什么呢?whose 不是从句吗?and 也是连接词,为什么还缺连词呢?
还说do not describe the same thing...可是我感觉BC之间的差别就是but和后面的again,为什么C就平行,B就不平行了呢?为什么C就描述的同一个事情,B就不是呢?谢谢!

whose和who这两个从句的主语不一致

who指代的是那一类人
whose指代的是那一类人的,因为是所有格,所以不平行
如果把它变成普通的句子,则应该是
He receives ...while living, his reputation declines after death.

这样你就能看出这里需要一个连词了。

那请问可以这样吗?
He is a kind of person who..., who... and who...

TOP

可以,但是who, whose就不行,另外你说的那个结构应该是

he is a kind of person who ..., who ..., and who ..
这样and和谁并列就很清楚了。

TOP

哦,谢谢你!
是不是说,如果平行,就可以去掉中间的连接词,只要在最后一个成分前加and.
如果不平行,则需要加连接词?

TOP

额,不是.....
是 xxx, xxx, and xxx这种明显的并列结构

和 I did my homework, but he didnt.
I went home at 6, and she came to my place at 7.
你举得例子和我举得例子一样,主语不是一个主语,不能直接用and连接。
一个主语是他,一个主语是他的名气。

非常谢谢你!

我理解的;
B:一是若主语是composer,然后who,whose and regain并列的话,明显错误。从句并列应该在regain前加上who,才符合从句并列。(当然即使加上了who,因为后面的it指代的是reputation,就变成了作曲家重新获得了了他名声的地位,逻辑不通)

二是regain its status明显是与declines并列,在whose从句里,因为后面有个its,说明指代的是reputation。这样,who与whose reputation引导的完整句子并列是就缺失了连词了,所以错。必须有but。

the two modifiers “who receives popular acclaim…” and “whose reputation declines…” 都是修饰 the kind of composer,在功能上是平行的。
并且由于表达的意思相反,是需要连接词 but 的。即便意思相同,whose前面还是缺连接词and,反正没有连接词我无法接受这个句子。。。。
它所说的描述两件事是指the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living and whose reputation declines after death don't describe the same thing because the first is about the composer, the second about his reputation.

刚才看到一个很好的解释,贴上来给不懂的亲们看看

The OG says that the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living and whose reputation declines after death don't describe the same thing because the first is about the composer, the second about his reputation, and the two are being contrasted, so they need to be connected with a contrasting conjunction such as but.

可能会有疑问:第二个whose也是在讲composer的嘛!

In the first, {the composer himself} receives popular acclaim.
In the second, the composer's {reputation }declines.
所以两个句子讲的东西不一样,要用连词链接。
