The quotation “You can tell the ideas of a nation by its advertisement” means that advertisement, as a media, can reflect the values, attitudes, trend of thoughts and so on of a nation. Whatever its forms and functions, advertisement is a carrier of information. By the content, the expressional ways of the information and the frequency of advertisement of the same kind etc., we can come to be aware of the ideas of a nation.
A young man looks out of his high-class Audi car and stares at a beautiful lady walking by; the message is that if you have money and car, then you will have woman. This is an advertisement of Audi car that issued in France. The ad conveys explicitly that women are not equal to man, women are subordinate to men, and women are mentioned in the same breath with money and car, that it is, objects. In fact, the attitude toward women expressed in the ad is in accordance with reality. Therefore, we can tell women’s social status in France by the advertisement.
On the other hand, another ad is completely contrary to the Audi car ad. This is an ad of women’s shoes: a man sits gracefully with nothing on but a pair of woman’s shoes. Are Frenchmen longing to become women? At least, by the two seemingly contrary ads, we can know that facing the inequality between to sexes, French are struggling for the equality.
From the proportion of some kind of ads in all ads, we can tell the values of a nation. Search in main newspapers or magazines in many city in China, you will find a great number of advertisements of refresher courses for English, computers and MBAs and of studying abroad or emigration. It is obvious that Chinese people admire and pursue western culture, living environment, knowledge, skills, technology and so on. From the frequency of some kind of ad Watch a cluster of ads, you may feel that so many medicines rush out. These ads implicate that people are more and more concerned about physical health and the quality of life.
All in all, advertising is carrier of information. Although its main function is to promote products and in recent years advertising is more and more international, it inevitably reflects the culture, customers, values, and attitudes in a nation. Thus, we can identify the ideas of a nation by its advertisement. |
