是的。。。不能做noun...
despite部分确实应该加being...

亲。。。本身这个being就是多余呀，应该是是不要的

despite后面只能加名词，called是过去分词，不能做名词


being called 形成了一个simple gerund，这是才是despite 的合理用法


就像OG12的一题正确句子...being heavily commiited 才能当名词做主语而不是heavily committed这个过去分词作主语，我记得的past participle是不能做noun的，这部分记忆有点模糊


有木有人further clarify？

我就想问问，though called a sea 和 despite being called a sea 在意义上有啥区别啊？不都是表被动，那还 ...

我认为这是让步状语从句与主句主语不一致的错误，being called a sea的主语应该是Caspian，而不应该是the largest lake on earth。虽然意义上the largest lake on earth和Caspian是对的，但是语法上它是不正确的，因为这会给不知道Caspian就是the largest lake on earth的人造成理解上错误！

OG13，SC，第74题的D项的解释里说：
Despite and although are very close in meaning.

这个就见仁见智了，我觉得不似although那么强烈，但还是有.
在线词典上查到的解释供参考：
You use despite to introduce a fact which makes the other part of the sentence surprising.

应该是although, though一般会跟转折，而despite后面往往不是转折意味吧。

这里我也想了蛮久，我是这样理解的：一般来说前面用despite意味着后面会出现句意转折，具体到这个题，转折应该出现在以the largest lake为主语的句子主干里，这就是OG解释里说的lead one to expect it not to be the Caspian啦
