07prep 第114题求解~

A study on couples' retirement transitions found that women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction, more than when retiring completely.A C

(A) more than when retiring

(B) more than if they were to retire

(C) more so than those who retired

(D) which was more so than those retiring

(E) which was more than if they had retired
答案是选C,C中的那个more so 这种用法没见过啊,而且我觉得这个比较 应该是前者的satisfaction 和后者的satistaction 之间,但是按C的意思,不就成了2种类型的women直接的比较吗?不符合题意啊。

Even though, when is still comparing with after. The hypothetical situation should be a before situation, as a general situation, but not a being situation.

My understanding of A was based on the context in this sentence, which gives the phrase of "after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction".....I think GMAC likes this pattern.

your understanding of choice A seems imprecise, at least in my opinion

but your understanding about so is right

so should refer to reported high satisfaction

it cannot refer to noun (as stated by prep07语法笔记)

I'm pretty sure about this issue

I don't know why C is correct, but I can give my view of the in-correction of ABDE. Hope this can also help.

A. "when retiring" means something happening! It is obviously wrong.... the contrast should be between "after" and "before" at least!
B. "were to" is not acceptable in the GMAT.
D. "which" should refer to "satisfaction", then the word "so" after "more" is unnecessary.
E. "which" should refer to "satisfaction", there should be a "that" after "than" to establish the comparison.

As to C, I guess "so" refers to the meaning of the previous content. Open to discuss....

tricky one

I have no idea

I will post my doubt here ,hoping further clarification

there are two different meaning conveyed by choice A and C

A states the second part of the comparison a hypothetical

C states the ones who take new jobs are being compared to those who don't

If we are going to protect the intended meaning, how should we still choose C  when C is no longer the original meaning

Is it A and B wrong for other more explicit reason such as inferior meaning or??
