If you are planning to apply to colleges for undergraduate studies in US/Australia/Canada and other countries you need to take up SAT. SAT - Scholastic Aptitude Test is required by most of the colleges for undergraduate admissions.

SAT scores form an important criteria for admissions as well as for scholarships and other financial aids.

About the test

The SAT tests include SAT I which is the General Reasoning Test and SAT II which is the Subject Test.

SAT I:
It is a three-hour, multiple-choice test that measures verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities.

Verbal questions test your ability to understand and analyze what you read, recognize relationships between parts of a sentence, establish relationships between pairs of words. Math questions test your ability to solve problems involving arithmetic, algebra and geometry

The SAT I is a three-hour test made up of seven sections.
3 Verbal Sections Analogies (19 questions), Sentence completion (19 questions), Critical reading (40 questions), 3 Math sections Five-choice multiple-choice (35 questions)
Four-choice quantitative comparison (15 questions) , Student-produced response (10 questions) Equating section Either Verbal or Math.

SAT II:

Subject tests are one-hour primarily multiple-choice tests that measure knowledge of particular subjects and ability to apply that knowledge. Subject Tests help colleges compare the academic achievements of students from different schools because courses and grading standards vary from school to school.


NOTE No more than three subjects can be taken on one day. SAT I and SAT II cannot be taken on the same day.

Successful preparation for SAT

1. Find out ALL the information you can about the test. Visit www.collegeboard.com - the official site or order a SAT bulletin. Indians can order the SAT bulletin from here, www.ipem.org/ets.htm.

2. Get familiar with the test. The kinds of questions asked and how to choose the answers

3. Read Read and Read out side of the text book. It will help you a lot in answering the questions requiring

4. Find out if the colleges you’re interested in, require the SAT 1 or SAT 2 by contacting the colleges or checking the College Handbook.

5. There are preparatory materials available for the SAT. Books and CDs will definitely help you in the process.

5. SAT is a paper based test Take some time before marking an answer. As rubbing and re- marking and all will disqualify your choice.

The SAT

The meaning behind the name "SAT" is complicated. According to the Kaplan website: "Originally, SAT stood for Scholastic Aptitude Test. When the test changed a few years ago, the official name was changed to Scholastic Assessment Test. In 1997, the test makers announced that SAT no longer stands for anything, officially."


The SAT is intended to forecast a student’s ability to perform in his or her freshman (first) year at college. The test consists of two portions, one measuring students mathematical skills and the other their verbal skills. The College Board administers this test in the United States. As the College Board’s website says, the test "does not pretend to measure all factors related to freshman success, but its scores have a statistically significant relationship to that success." There is some controversy in the United States as to the value of the SAT, but it continues to weigh heavily in any college’s evaluation process.
