Life After Sloan
Graduates of MIT, like those addressed by Deputy Dean JoAnne Yates (above) at the 2010 commencement, are automatically plugged into the network of more than 25,000 Sloan alumni and 100,000 MIT alumni. In more than 75 MIT Alumni Association Clubs around the world, fellow alumni foster close connections to each other and their alma mater.

Prominent alumni of the school include former U.N. Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan, former Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) President and CEO Carly Fiorina and Ford Motor (F) Executive Chairman and Former CEO, William Clay Ford. Entrepreneurship is also big among graduates, with more than 650 going on to start companies.

In years when the economy fares well, so do MIT graduates, with about 98 percent of them offered jobs in their first three months out of school. During tougher economic times, about 87 percent of students are offered jobs. The median starting salary has stayed around $110,000 in recent years. The top hiring industries are consulting, investment banking, and software.

Sloan Sports Business Conference
Another event hosted by Sloan is the MIT Sloan Sports Business Conference. The first conference was held in 2007 and featured keynote speakers J.P. Ricciardi, a former Major League Baseball executive, and Jamie McCourt, former chief executive of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 2009 conference featured Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who debated basketball analytics with some of the league's top users. Organizers of the conference took a minute after the panel discussion to discuss the finer points with Cuban (above right).

Movers and Shakers
The MIT Sloan Business in Gaming Conference, now in its second year at Sloan, brings together video gaming professionals to discuss their most pressing business challenges. Pictured above are Dennis Fu (right), MBA '09, and Ken Levine of 2K Boston during a question-and-answer session at last year’s conference.

The conference is just one of many such gatherings that take place at Sloan throughout the year. The MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative brings experts to MIT to address topics that include poverty, public health, and global climate change. Top current and former executives, such as Indra Nooyi of Pepsico (PEP), Anne Mulcahy of Xerox (XRX), and Orit Gadiesh of Bain & Co., visit the MIT campus frequently as part of the Dean's Innovative Leader Speakers Series.

First-rate Faculty
More than 100 faculty members, about 70 of them tenured, work with the students at Sloan. Most professors remain active in their fields of expertise while at Sloan. For instance, Anjali Sastry, pictured above right, is a senior lecturer in system dynamics. Her current research addresses health systems in settings where resources are limited, and she collaborates closely with colleagues in global health delivery on field research, case development, and novel teaching approaches.

Undergraduate Programs
The undergraduate degree offered at Sloan is also a top-ranked and competitive program. The B.S. in Management Science is one of the most popular majors at Sloan.

Only about 11 percent of applicants to MIT are accepted, and about 200 of those students go on to study at the Sloan school. In recent years, about 90 percent of the incoming freshman graduated with a high-school GPA of 3.75 or higher. The annual tuition for both residents and nonresidents is nearly $40,000.

On average, about 40 percent of the undergraduate business students are female and 7 percent are international.

Research Materials
MBA and undergraduate students at Sloan have the Dewey library to turn to for research and study. It is one of the five major libraries serving the MIT community and the primary library for Sloan and its Economics and Political Science departments. More than 200 individual study spaces and 12 group study rooms are available for student use. The library’s collection contains more than 300,000 volumes in management and social sciences. The library subscribes to nearly 3,000 journals and serials, including more than 80 databases.

Flexible Curriculum
Through the first-semester core, students build the foundation of their MIT Sloan education. Working with a highly diverse team of five or six classmates, they gain fundamental skills through required course work in economics, accounting, managerial communication, business statistics, and organizational processes, as well as an elective in either strategic marketing or finance.

Only one semester long, the core allows students flexibility in pursuing individual interests throughout the rest of their time at Sloan. Some of the electives recently added to the full-time program include Strategic Opportunities in Energy, Enabling an Energy-Efficient Society, and Financial Crises.

Top Design
The Stata Center for Computer, Information, and Intelligence Sciences, pictured above, was designed by architect Frank Gehry and completed in 2004. It is built on the site of MIT's legendary Building 20, a "temporary" timber-framed building constructed during World War II that served as a breeding ground for many of the ideas born at MIT, including some fundamental advances in areas as diverse as electromagnetism and the origins of language. Its striking design—featuring tilting towers, many-angled walls, and whimsical shapes—is meant to challenge many of the conventional ideas about laboratory and campus buildings.
