when use"unlike", the comparison has to be grammatical and logical. in A choice, compared the conviction to Barbara McClintock, hence, A is wrong. B,C,E choices use "being" ( wordy). Hope this can help.

首先得承认D的句子的确写的好；B/C/E 读起来感觉就是不顺。
LZ可以试着读一遍D在读一遍B.
对比得出
B  Were of the conviction  VS D were convinced
会不会觉得D 选项在用词上： 直接使用动词比名词更加有力，且句意强调被说服。。。。

同时B/C/E 都出现了Being， 但我个人不觉的这个being分词有什么其他用， 如果紧紧表达“是”的系动词意思话，用were 就好。 并且WERE 的时态，结构，用词都和句子未划线部分平行对称。

C 也使用到BEING...  感觉不对，理由在上面我的贴有说啊。
貌似being 不是什么好的表达方式，OG12-52 E选项being错啦
