Choice C is imprecise, saying that England in 1788 was Beginning a period... but not conveying the sense that anything happened within that period. Choice D is awkward and unidiomatic, and nonsensically suggests that a hundred years is defined as a period beginning in 1788. Precise and idiomatically phrased, choice E is best.

77 D中come to 不能省略，否则就改变了原意，而且suggest用完成时不妥，她在文中表示的是一种状态

77、请看qiufeng1990前面发的讨论帖子，里面有多人意见。
220、D用a period beginning in 1788做了a hundred years的同位语，起到限定100年的作用。若所有的100年都是开始于1788年，不是很荒谬吗？

谢谢版主，不过我还有一个疑问，对于正确答案E， 它和D有什么区别呢？ E中的beginnign 是修饰 period 还是 a hundred year?

另外如果把D中的 a hundred year 改为 the hundred year, 是不是就对了呢？

77 my point of view:
"sth may suggest....., it has come to signify....." is better than "....., it has signified"
the former means: graphic design 可能是指.....现在它已经用来指.....
while the latter means: graphic design 可能是指.....它已经表示了......
前者平行性较好，而后者强调了动作的完成，不符合原句的意思
