答案解释是：因为后面出现了such firms, 所以前面应该出现firm，这样与such呼应。但是问题是这个require of sb. to do sth. 的结构似乎解释不通。

全部这么理解：因为在（以快速创新和需求变化为标志的电子行业中，）需要大量R&D花费来使公司存活，因此这类公司往往是大公司。
