CV = curricular vitae. CV is not the same thing as resume. The former tends to be lnoger and more detailed. For instance if you're applying for a teaching position in a university you must include publications, patents etc in your CV. In business settings, shorter format (i.e. resume) is more acceptable, presumly because HR folks have no time or patience to read a 5 pages CV.
