1. One of the biggest areas that you could improve to make your application more competitiveis the GMAT. Improving your GMAT will help your applicationtremendously. A number of applicants do take the GMAT multiple times and havevarying success. Many applicants believe if they study more than they did theprevious time they will do better. Unfortunately, that is not the case most ofthe time, these tests are very structured and if you are not getting the resultthat you hoped for you probably are missing a key component of the strategy forthe approach to the test. So doing the same thing over just with more time willnot likely yield the results you are looking for.
What I would recommend is taking a GMAT prep course. I understand that it is acost, however, if you are prepared to spend the money on Business School thenspend the money on a prep course to help you get into Business School. Prepcourses are designed to provide students with strategy on how to approach andtake the test as well as give the student direct feedback on areas which theyneed to improve and how to improve them. The strategy and feedback are key to improving your scoreto make you a competitive candidate and is something you will not get justbuying a GMAT prep book and studying on our own. 2. Another area you can improve to make your application competitive is your personalstatement. Thenumber one most important thing to remember is to write to the prompt providedby each school. Do not just write a general personal statement and sendthat out to all of the schools you are applying to. Most schools put in a great deal of time andeffort in crafting their personal statement prompt because it will helpidentify which applicants are ideal for their program. Not writing totheir prompt will be an automatic denial for admission because it shows theschool that you did not take the time to research what they are looking for andthat may be a direct reflection of what kind of student you will be in theclassroom.
Also, be sure to get your personal statement reviewed by atleast two different people. The more people that can review it the better because they will be able to catchgrammatical and spelling errors that you may have overlooked. 4. Lastly, stay in constant communication with therecruiters for Business Schools. That being said, there is a line to walk, youdo not want to become an annoyance but you also do not want to be out of sightand out of mind. The application process for both the recruiter and applicant is about relationship building. If you are an applicant that is on the line of whether you getin or not, a recruiter or admissions representative who has a strongrelationship could fight for you to get in and could be the difference onwhether you are granted admission or not.
