My reflections on GMAT preparation I first started my struggle with GMAT back in 2007 Dec when I took my first Powerprep test. Without any preparation or knowledge of how GMAT works, I got a score of 460. This disastrous result daunted me. I realize how much work I needed to put in to get to my goal – 700 above. I then registered for my first official test for Feb. During this time, I unfortunately had only about 2 weeks to prepare as I was still working. I studied the GMAT Official Guide 11 and completed the sample questions in the math and sentence correction sections of the book. I got both 100% on the diagnostic test for Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning in the OG and thought that it was alright to skip practice considering the limited time I had. I was dead wrong…

I was dead wrong… On Feb 21st. I did my first GMAT official test. The result was a shocking 540 (Q40, V25). I wasn’t really expecting how well I could do due to the lack of practice. But with Math scaled at about 65% and Verbal at about 40%, I started to doubt my capabilities. Am I that bad academically? I was even hoping that the informal score shown on the computer screen may be scaled wrongly… It was a bad night for me…

I started to gather more information on how GMAT works by first purchasing two additional guidebooks – the Princeton Review, Cracking the GMAT 2008, and Kaplan GMAT 2008, both of which are very highly rated on discussion forums. By now, I have 4 books, OG11, Princeton, Kaplan, and Barrons (this was a mistake…).

I even thought of hiring a tutor. This is when I found the websites http://www.chemy.idv.tw/ , http://forum.chasedream.com , and http://www.beatthegmat.com . These websites contain a lot more information than I could dream of. Thousands of forum users were in the same situation as I was. Thousands of users shared their successful stories on beating the GMAT. It took me about 2 to 3 nights to come up with a study plan and figure out the best approach for me. I must say that everyone needs a unique study plan to best suit in whatever conditions they are in. My study plan was for a period of about 6 weeks including weekends. Though I had the plan and study materials in place and knowing that I had to complete my test in April, I did not jump to registering for a date yet…

Though I had the plan and study materials in place and knowing that I had to complete my test in April, I did not jump to registering for a date yet… By studying the websites I mentioned above, I came to understand the below:
By studying the websites I mentioned above, I came to understand the below: By studying the websites I mentioned above, I came to understand the below: By studying the websites I mentioned above, I came to understand the below: 1) GMAT is not a math/English proficiency test, it’s a Graduate Management Admission Test written and organized by a for profit organization ETS. You are NOT stupid if you do poorly in GMAT, you are just not well prepared and did not understand how GMAT works. 2) ETS changes their questions database every month (hence each test you take needs at least 31 days in between). With this in mind, you may pick a best date estimating just before ETS changes the test ‘bins’. Why do you do that? Tens of thousands of students take the GMAT each month and they DO share their test experience in forums. These experiences from your fellow test takers are most beneficial to you in your preparation. 3) Which guide books, which test questions, and where to discuss problems you can’t solve? 4) Other than the guidebooks, I gathered the following study materials from these forums: A. GWD sample tests B. PP tests C. JJ for the test month During the 6 weeks, it was hell! I studied about 10 to 12 hours a day. I was lucky to have a great wife and mom helping out with the two kids while I lock myself in the room, study. Eventually I summarized study materials for both Sentence Correction and Math. I was able to get most of my questions resolved from these discussion forums, for those that couldn’t be answered, mostly English, I turn to an American English Teacher, Carla, I came to know via email. I looked her up online and she was so kind to help with all grammar problems I had. The study plan did not actually go as planned. Several changes needed to be made to keep myself on track of the schedule and to tackle with later found weaknesses efficiently. But this is good. Carefully attend to the plan and make modifications alerts me of how much time I have left and what more is needed to complete the study. At the second last week in the study, I took a Powerprep mock-up test, I scored 720 and felt that I should be ready. I didn’t take any more Preps after that as I had originally planned because I thought I didn’t need it anymore.

I booked for the morning test at 9:00, which means I had to wake up at 6 in the morning for further review and leave at 7:30 to catch that schedule. When I arrived at the test center, I found that I did not bring my passport!!! This was a killer! I stomped around thinking if I was going to throw the 250 USD in the drain and wait for another month to take the test? The school application deadline does not allow this and I wasn’t going to study for another month! I called my wife and she drove for 45 minutes to just get me my passport. Thank god for my wife! She made it just in time and I was allowed in to the test.

I took many deep breathe trying to shake off the tiredness and anxiety. This time, I was prepared. I stuffed my ear plugs (they work wonders!!! Especially when kids are noisy) in, raised my chair to a better eyes-to-screen level, rubbed my eyes and cleaned my glasses, I began the test. The test lasted for 4 hours, it was long and exhausting. As I finished the last question and clicked through the questionnaires that follow it, I was at the screen to report my score! I prayed before I made that click. Its 700 – 92 percentile (Q 50, V 33)! I thought I could have done better, but this score should be enough for school application and that’s all I needed! I signed such a big relief and began calling everyone to share this news! I called my wife 4 times to just laugh about it J
