我个人认为 but 当连词使用的时候 注意三种情况
1. A, but B 这里A.B不需要完全对称 A.B是各自完整的句子   "但是"
2 参考本题 Laos has a land area but a population   "但是" 这个要求对成 但不是

最严格的对称
3. 参考 The purpose of the scheme is not to help the employers but to provide

work for young people  "而是"   要求严格对称
还有就是but 当介词使用的时候不要求对成(这一点常常难以分辨)
e.g
He wanted nothing but to stay here. 除了留在这里之外, 他别无所求。

LZ我想补充一下 E选其实是最对称的 完整的句子是： Laos has a land area  comparable to that of Great Britain but （Laos has）a population of only four million people。因为平行，所以相同的成分，也就是括号里的成分就被省略了。我记得逗号+but的用法与逗号+and的用法一致，就是加了逗号后，but或者and之后的句子需要是完整的有主谓的句子（主语可以为代词），比如..., but Laos has...，如果but/and后没有主语，句子就成了run-on sentence的一种。如果前后主语一致而不想重复主语，且用but/and 连接前后句子，but/and前不能有逗号，就像1楼举的例子，he wanted nothing but (he wanted) to stay here。这是我通过OG总结的，不是语法定理什么的。选择性的看吧。

个人觉得三楼的说得很好，能否回答一下为什么C中OG解释说是过于强调了many of？？
是不是many of 是从句，现在变成了并列的结构？

them可以指代句子中没有出现的noun，whom很清晰地向前指代
