Pioneer High School Group, Pioneers
Mr. Ken Westerman, ’67, formed the Pioneers in 1981, during his first year of teaching at Pioneer, as a way to increase the small number of men in the Pioneer Choirs. Their first performance was at an all-school assembly honoring Pioneer alumni Jack Lousma, ’54, who was an astronaut in the American space program from 1973-1982. Their first song was Old Man Noah arranged by Marshall Bartholomew. For that first public performance Russell Ginns, ’83, re-wrote the text so the song became Old Man Lousma. Initially their repertoire was made up of selections sung by the Yale Glee Club, Spizzwinks, and Whiffenpoofs. Their repertoire has come to be made up primarily of arrangements of popular tunes. |
