Letters of Recommendation

An integral part of the Pritzker School of Medicine application is the letters of recommendation requirement. You may choose one of the following ways to satisfy the letters of recommendation requirement for the Pritzker application:

1.        Submit three or more letters of recommendation from individuals
Three individual letters will fulfill the requirement. There is no maximum.

Please try to arrange to have all of your letters arrive at approximately the same time. Your application will be considered complete when your first three letters have arrived and will be reviewed by the admissions committee at that time. Receipt of additional letters of recommendation after that time will not re-open your file for a second review.

2.        Submit a packet of three individual letters from a Career Counseling Center or Health Professions Advising Office

3.        Submit a Health Professions Advisor or Committee letter, with, or without, additional letters attached

If your school provides a Health Professions Advisor or Committee letter service, and you choose not to use this option, you will be asked to explain your decision in completing our Secondary application.

Pritzker accepts letters of recommendation through the AMCAS Letters service. Should you run into any difficulty with your letters arriving, we will also accept letters via postal mail or alternate means of electronic upload (Virtual Evals, Interfolio). It is important to note that you are responsible for making sure that your letters have been received by our office. The "Application Status" link on the left-hand navigation bar of your Secondary Application portal will let you know which aspects of your application we have received.

The letters are an important part of the Admissions Committee’s efforts tounderstand your application and should be approached thoughtfully. If you aresubmitting letters of recommendations from individuals, we encourage you to dothe following:

·
Seek letters from individuals who haveinsight into your intellectual and interpersonal strengths and abilities andcan speak to your motivation, readiness and suitability for medicine

Policy Regarding Applicant Misrepresentation

We expect our applicants to be completely truthful in every aspect of their application to medical school. An “application” includes the full AMCAS application, letters of recommendation, our Secondary Application, and any other supplemental material you may provide us. If we suspect that there is a misrepresentation on your application, we will first give you a chance to explain the discrepancy. If your explanation does not adequately assuage our concerns about the misrepresentation, we will notify AMCAS of the discrepancy in accordance with its Policies and Procedures for Investigating Reported Violations of Admission and Enrollment Standards. We reserve the right to revoke an offer of interview or of admission if a misrepresentation has occurred.

Admissions Process

How to Apply
The University of Chicago utilizes the online American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Every student who submits an application through AMCAS will receive a Pritzker School of Medicine Secondary Application by email.

The Secondary Application requires a non-refundable fee of $85.00, which may be waived if the applicant has been granted the AMCAS Fee Waiver Program. The Secondary Application requires one committee letter or premedical advisor's letter. Three individual letters will also fulfill the requirement. There is no maximum letter limit. Please see Letters of Recommendation Tips for additional information on this requirement.

For a regular decision application, the deadline for filing AMCAS is October 15 and the Secondary Application must be submitted by 11:59 pm (CST) on December 2. Applicants interested in early decision, the MSTP and MeSH programs and joint degree applications have a slightly different admissions process. Please visit our Admissions Timeline for a complete listing of deadlines and an explanation of these other processes.

Interview & Decision Process

Admission is granted to students on a rolling admissions basis throughout the year.

When the application materials are complete, the Admissions Committee reviews the candidate's Secondary Application, AMCAS application, and letters of recommendation. If an applicant's credentials have been favorably reviewed, he/she is invited via email to visit the campus for an interview. During this day-long visit, candidates receive an orientation to Pritzker and the University of Chicago, information on financial aid, a tour of the Medical Center, and are hosted at lunch by medical students. The interview day provides the committee with an opportunity to get to know the candidate and interviewees are encouraged to ask questions to obtain insights into the university community, curriculum, faculty and student body.

After the interview, applicants will be notified of the admission committee's final decision by mail. Accepted students are asked to follow the AAMC Standard Response Guidelines.

Course of Study
MD/MBA students at the University of Chicago typically complete the first two years of medical school before applying to the Booth School of Business (application is submitted during the third year clerkships).  If accepted, the student takes a yearlong leave of absence after third year to pursue full-time coursework at Chicago Booth. Following the year of full-time MBA work, students return to the medical school for their fourth year of medical school. During that final year of the MD degree, MD/MBA students take electives in both the Pritzker School of Medicine and Chicago Booth. Typical MD/MBA students complete both degrees in 5-6 years.
Students who pursue the MD/MBA may participate in the Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy (GPHAP). This program allows students to earn a Certificate in Health Administration and Policy while earning a master's degree at Chicago Booth, the Harris School of Public Policy Studies and the School of Social Service Administration.
Funding Support
The Pritzker School of Medicine has some limited funds to support business school tuition for MD/MBA students. For additional information, please email the Financial Aid Office regarding the Steve Weiner Fellowship.

Alumni
Past graduates of the MD/MBA program have used their business training to become leaders of major health care organizations such as physician practices, hospitals, or insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
