一点问题都没有，absorbing状语可以修饰前一句that would rise six feet above the waterline and act as a buffer。that代a breakwater of rocks ，所以absorbing是修饰a breakwater of rocks。

你忘记看最后面的and protecting了，它和absorbing平行

1.修饰名词 the changing season
2.修饰动词和其主语： I finished the work, whistling.
3.修饰整句话，只要这句话能够作为doing的主语： The oil ship sinked, thus causing many pollutants.
doing修饰，既可以作为“结果（第3点）”，也可以作为“方式（第2点）”

hey buddy！这里的用法是comma+Ving结构的特殊用法，修饰了preceding noun。这个例子已经被引用好多次拉，说明这个结构从未失去做定于的功能。

这题我发表一下我的看法；“，-ving"   不能修饰前边的名词，这是一个金规定，   只所以总有人提起这个问题就在于偶尔有些题用它来作定语似乎也说的通。其实不然意思上有很大的问题。 单就这道题而论，其实它还是修饰动词的。它其实是表目的的像个不定式

包括以下这道题其实都不是做定语的，shields were essential items of military equipment, protecting warriors against enemy arrows and spears.
当然这个问题有点抽象，不一定马上你就能明白，但是一定要记住这是一个金标准，绝对不能打破
