因为infinitives 的form 只有 present & perfect 两种.
所以不存在为何不用past perfect tense。

appear to had been 是错误的表达，to后面只能是动词原形，表示现在和将来用to do,过去用to have done，没有 ...

但是为什么用have been 而不用had been啊？？？他们不是已经在以前就消失了吗？？？应该是过去的过去用appear to had been 啊？？

appear to 意思是“似乎”，是从现在的角度看的。相当于the evidence shows that the dinosaur was 18 metres tall.
表示这个种族消失用的是不定式 to 后面的have
