Columbia Business School
In 1754, the Church of England established in New York an institute for higher education—the fifth of its kind in America—known then as King's College. After the Revolution, however, the school adopted a new, less colonial name: Columbia University.

The Ivy League school gained a full-time, two-year MBA program in 1916 and has since become a top-10 fixture in the rankings. As a result of the curriculum overhaul of 2008, Columbia Business School now boasts a flexible core that allows students to home in on a specific career path as part of their core courses. The curriculum also weaves in ethical considerations, starting with a required pre-term module on corporate governance. With more than 20 concentrations available, Columbia students gain a career-tailored management education in one of the world's foremost business capitals.

Urban Opportunities
Some MBAs have all the luck. New York is a living business laboratory for those at Columbia: thousands of multinational companies and major stock, bond, and commodity exchanges are accessible from Columbia. It's also a haven for those who want to consider less traditional business careers: Music, fashion, media, and other creative industries are also centered in New York. Says one Columbia graduate in a BusinessWeek survey: "Columbia has the unparalleled New York advantage. I don't think any other school offers such a good combination of excellent career prospects and colorful life."

The City
Students are a subway ride away from the city's greatest claims to fame: Times Square, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, world-famous cuisine, Broadway theater, the Yankees, the Mets, and everything in between. Whoever you are and whatever you're into, you'll find the best of it in New York.

Morningside Heights
But there's more to Columbia's environs than the skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan. Columbia is right in the heart of Morningside Heights, a Manhattan neighborhood just a short walk from Central Park. It shares the neighborhood with at least three other colleges and various theological seminaries, making Morningside Heights—sometimes called the Acropolis of America—a diverse and intellectual playground for students.

Columbia Business School students regularly give back to Morningside Heights through Community Action Rewards Everyone (CARE), an umbrella organization for all community service activities at the school. Each winter, students, faculty and staff host the Holiday Party for Kids, an evening of games, food, music and arts and crafts for children from shelters and after-school programs in the Morningside Heights area.

Student Profile
With an acceptance rate below 20%, Columbia Business School makes it a statistically impressive feat to get into the full-time MBA program. The quality of students is equally so: Most CBS students (about 28 years old) have almost five years of work experience gracing their résumés, with average GMAT scores ranging from 660 to 760. One-third of the class is from overseas, and 32% is female.

The Total Columbia Package
The Columbia experience, even at the MBA level, is a multidisciplinary one. Columbia Business School is housed primarily in Uris Hall, located at the center of Columbia's campus. Students have access to thousands of graduate courses across the university within steps of the business school. They can earn dual degrees with 10 other Columbia graduate schools including the Law School, Medical School, and School of International & Public Affairs, and they can leverage the resources and reputation of a world-renowned research university.

Columbia Customs
Upon matriculating at Columbia, MBAs-to-be are ushered into the culture and traditions of the school. From the Primal Scream at midnight before final exams to a naked run in autumn to a tree-lighting along College Walk during the holidays, rituals range from wholesome to absurd—but they all help build the Columbia community. Students here celebrate the winter months with snowy tomfoolery outside of the library.

Team MBA
Incoming students are divided randomly into clusters of approximately 65 students who attend all first-year core courses together. These clusters foster a teamwork ethos as well as a long-term network. Other teamwork initiatives at Columbia include Columbia's Program on Social Intelligence (PSI)—a mélange of case studies, coaching, interview drilling, career planning, and leadership classes that equip first-year students with the soft skills necessary to manage individuals, teams, and organizations in a global context. Second-years who lead clubs or act as peer advisers are eligible for advanced leadership training from PSI

Academic Blueprint
Columbia seeks to individualize the MBA. The average size for an elective class is 40 students, and core classes typically hold 60 students each. Columbia's core curriculum was redesigned in 2008, allowing more flexibility for students to home in on their interests. In the second half of the second term, students can choose one core class from each of three categories: organizations, performance, and markets. The curriculum also offers 15 areas of focus.

Dean Glenn Hubbard, above, former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President George W. Bush, teaches a course on Entrepreneurial Finance in the core curriculum each fall.

Teaching
Teaching styles at Columbia are balanced evenly between case studies and lectures, as professors aim to bridge academia and real life. The faculty includes the likes of Hitendra Wadhwa, shown above, who has won awards for his teaching, including the 2007 Most Engaging and Dynamic Professor Award by the Marketing Association of Columbia. Wadhwa, like many other professors, brings his professional experience in strategy consulting and marketing to the classroom.
