“The most effective way for managers to assign work is to divide complex tasks into their simpler component parts. This way, each worker completes a small portion of the task but contributes to the whole.” (pool第107题)
提纲:
1. 每个员工都目标明确因此更有效率
2. 缺乏全局观念也可能出现协调上的困难
3. 好的leader好的分配是前提和保证
The argument presented above is plausible but not fully correct, because it emphasizes too much on the advantages of dividing tasks while neglects some underlying problems of such practice.
First, it's true that when a manager encounters a complex issue, one of the most effective way for him to solve it is to divide it into simpler component parts. He can also apply this practice in his daily delegation for some routine work. Nevertheless, not all tasks can be divided into parts, and be assigned to individual workers, for example, the planning of a corp's strategy, a critical decision-making closely related to the corp's market positioning, etc. These are all complex tasks that can be accomplished through division of jobs to several workers, because they need highly central ideas among the management level and are beyond the reach of common workers.
Second, although some routine tasks when separated to a number of workers can be done in less time and energy, and the responsibility seems to be also divided into smaller pieces onto several workers, the manager still cannot really decrease his risks in running a project out of control. This is because when a task is divided and delegated to several persons, the leader may sometimes lose an effective control of the task integratedly, and once the workers focus too much on their own part of job, they will ignore others ‘advice and situation, thus lead to a disintegratedly finished work.
Last but not least, in a team, not all the members are willing to contribute to the group's success. Some free-riders will not only leave their own part unfinished or finished terribly, but also badly influence the whole group's proceeding due to their inadequacy. Therefore, whenever a manager is to divide a complex task to a group of members, he has to be really careful in his delegation, otherwise the final result will end up much worse than his expectations. |
