语法的很多东西是可以简化的,比如此题,如果我们老是去纠缠一些自己都搞不清的代词没有意义.在逻辑意思合理的情况下,动词的为老大!!!understand 比 understandable要好.(大家想想ets为什么把语文考试叫做verbal??????)
再说the processes by which 这个结构我们在阅读时见了太多了.

但是, OALECD第774页上有instead of的例句:
Let's play cards instead of watching television.

同理,reveal 和 underlying 并列应该也可以.

因为在process等抽象名词之后，通常由that从句或者of doing分词从句来解释或者说明。所以首先应排除CDE。

说that produce and make it understandable的错误,偶觉得应该可以省略共同的宾语it的.
比如: I found the apple smelt good, so I bought (some of them) and ate some of them.此处省略应该比不省好一些.

先不谈by which的用法, not...but...后面应该接对等的成分吧? 
underlying是动作性的现在分词, great complexity是名词呀! 如果非要用not...but...,至少应该是underlying not simplicity but great complexity吧.可是这样意思对吗?
再看by which:it is produced by which,是乎可以接受,但是it is understood by which怎么理解?偶觉得没有make it understandable好一些.
