正确答案为：

Repelled by bodily punishment such as maiming and branding, Quakers suggested the penitentiary as a reform of the penal system.

问题：这里的Repel 为什么用过去分词？

我对此句的理解是 Quakers 排斥 bodily punishment, 而不应该是被"bodily punishment"所排斥呀？

按我的理解，这句话应该改写为：Repeling bodily punishment such as maiming and branding, Quakers suggested the penitentiary as a reform of the penal system.

repel,
表示“反感”的意思的时候，我觉得应该用被动。
eg:

His villainous words repel everybody. 他的恶毒的话令其每个人都感到反感。
Everybody is repelled by his villainous words. 每个人都对他的话感到反感(用被动)。
