The MD-MBA program at Dartmouth promotes clinical credibilitywhile promoting managerial and administrative excellence.

Two of thecountry's most distinguished and established educational institutions,Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and the Tuck School of Business are offeringa joint MD-MBA degree in medicine and management to healthcare leaders. Both schools are noted for academic rigor,emphasis on teamwork, communication skills, and leadership development.

Introduction

The MD/MBA program at Dartmouth looks for students with initiative,originality, and the ability to work in a team environment. Applicants should have the ability to analyze and use tools of analysis tosolve complex managerial problems. Although most Tuck students have somemanagement background before they enroll, this is not an absolute prerequisitefor admissions.

Course of Study
•        The Dartmouth MD/MBA program offers both a five and six year program options. The five year program is tightly scheduled to allow further medical training or accelerated progression into a career, saving one year's tuition.
•        The six year track will allow the student to experience the full impact of both programs, including the Tuck Summer Internship program.

Admissions
Candidates must apply for admission to each school separately. Admission to one school does not guarantee admission to the other. Because the two schools have different admission and tuition cycles, early application to both programs is encouraged to facilitate coordination by the joining MD/MBA subcommittee.
•        Applicants are encouraged to apply for the combined degree program after admission and matriculation to DMS.
•        Applicants applying for the MD/MBA program prior to matriculating at Dartmouth Medical School should initiate an application to each school where independent admissions decisions will be made, but coordinated by a joint MD/MBA subcommittee. Applicants are advised to apply early during the applicant cycle so that the timing of decisions can be coordinated by both schools. Joint acceptances generally will require that the GMAT examination be taken no later than the application deadline. Each school's decision to admit or not admit is based solely on that school's selection criteria. Admission to one program does not guarantee admission to another.
•        Dartmouth Medical School requires on-site interviews in Hanover. At Tuck, although interviews are not required, they are strongly encouraged. All Tuck candidates are welcome to interview on campus. The admissions committee may contact you if they need to speak with you before making a final decision on your acceptance.
•        The Tuck School of Business has no mandatory prerequisites, but students are encouraged to be come familiar with Microsoft Excel, statistics, financial accounting and microecomonics. Application requirements include statement of honesty and integrity, self-reported GMAT results, self-reported TOEFL results (if applicable), self-reported transcripts, essay and short-answer questions, two confidential statements of qualifications (CSQs) and nonrefundable application fee.
•        Both schools require a high level of maturity, responsibility, and commitment to a career involving both disciplines, with an understanding of the issues and challenges in both fields. Candidates are expected to have some organizational work experience which is health-related.


Admission

The goal of the Geisel School's Admissions Committee is to enroll students who reflect all of those qualities and who will contribute to the uniquely close-knit and stimulating learning environment that defines the Geisel School. Dartmouth receives approximately 5,200 applications a year for about 85 places in the entering class. The Geisel School's student body is national in scope and impact. In fact, the vast majority of our students--over 90 percent in recent years, come from out-of-state.




Admissions Requirements
•        One year (8 semester hours or equivalent) of general biology and general physics.
•        Two years (16 semester hours or equivalent) of chemistry, which must include one semester (or equivalent) of organic chemistry and one semester (or equivalent) of biochemistry. The biochemistry requirement may be substituted with a second semester of organic chemistry for applicants entering in 2014, but is required for entry starting 2015.
•        One half-year (3 semester hours or equivalent) of college-level mathematics, including either calculus or statistics.
•        Facility in written and spoken English.
•        Three years of post-secondary study at US and/or Canadian colleges or universities with a broad range of study that introduces students to the sciences and humanities, preparing students to understand both the scientific basis of medicine and human behavior and society.
•        A semester of biochemistry is encouraged for the class entering in 2014 and required classes entering in 2015 and beyond.
•        Students are encouraged to major in a field of particular interest and, if possible, to pursue independent investigations in that field.
•        All candidates are expected to present scores from the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Students who choose not to submit MCAT scores will be at a disadvantage. Although the Admissions Committee does not employ rigid cutoffs, applicants should be aware that accepted applications have a median combined MCAT score of 34, and a median undergraduate GPA of 3.8.
•        For 2014 entry, the MCAT exam must have been taken between January 2011 and September 2013.

1.Do I need to take the GMAT?
Yes. Students applying to the joint MD/MBA program fill out the identical applications to those just applying the individual programs. All requirements for each program are required for the joint program.

6.Can I attend Tuck after completing year two of medical school instead of after completing year three?
Yes. The schedule is flexible to allow starting at Tuck either after year two or three. However, we encourage students to begin the MBA after year 3 so that they have the experience of clinical medicine to take with them to Tuck.
