09年 UNC MBA Interview 申请+面试精华汇总

欢迎来到UNC!
UNC 全称 THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH COROLINA, 在美国属于顶级公立大学. 学校所在地CHAPEL HILL 在美国是少见的安全而很有乐趣的大学城.FRANKLIN STREET 有数不清的酒吧和精致的小店. 据说因为CHAPEL HILL 的中小学教育很好, 很多富人居住在此, 故周围犯罪率比较低. 汽车保险是全美最低的5 个城市之一.
UNC 是个很不错的学校, MBA PROGRAM 的就业形势也不错. 二年纪有夏季INTERNSHIP 的学生比例是96%. 投行LEHMAN BROTHERS 今年夏季招了10 多个学生做INTERN, 现已经发了至少10 FULL TIME OFFER, 其它的J.P. MORGAN CHASE 发了4 个, BOA 2, MORGAN STANDLY 约3-4, WACHOVIA 约 10 FULL TIME OFFER. (其它投行没统计, 我个人也只了解FINANCE). 因为UNC MBA PROGRAM 很小, 每年约280 人, 选FINANCE 的人和对真正对投行感兴趣的比例并不大, 每年约65-70人选FINANCE 专业, 所以相对来说, 这些录取比例还是不错的.
专业及优势, UNC 各专业比较平衡. FINANCE 和MARKETING 是学生选得最多的CONCENTRATION, REAL ESTATE 人气越来越旺. SUPPLY CHAIN, OPERATION 虽然SIZE 很小, 实力不俗.
UNC 因为PROGRAM 很小, 学生之间关系比较密切; 同时, 因为是南方学校, 学生都很友好, 自然校友忠诚度也很高. 申请的时候学校也很看中你是不是真心想读UNC. 在校生从一开始进学校就感觉BEING LOVED, 个人以为这是MBA 非常稀罕的资源.
UNC 排名呈上升趋势, 今年WALL STREET JOURNAL 上UNC 排名10. 学校新DEAN 努力争取各方面资源, 不管是FACULTY 还是在校学生, 对学校都有很强的COMMITMENT.
今天UNC 约有11个大陆学生, 因为UNC 课程量相对比较重(对真心想学点实在东西的学生是件好事), 学校安排找工作也得步步紧跟, 所以一年级非常忙. UNC 有一个针对中国学生的 网页 和YAHOO GROUP, 大家在MBA 申请网站上可以看到. 有任何疑问可以发信给在校的中国学生.

北美TOP学校招办负责人采访录三(UNC)
Jim Dean, Associate Dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business School
Sherry Wallace, Director of MBA Admissions

问:一旦申请材料齐全,你们是如何处理的?多少人参与评审的过程?
答:Applications will be reviewed by at least two members of the admissions committee.
In addition to the application reviews, the interviews are often done by a third member of the admissions committee.
After the application reads are complete and the interview write up is gathered, then the applicant is presented before the entire committee for discussion and a decision.

问:录取委员会共包括多少人? 都有什么背景?
答:There are about 10 people on our admissions committee. At any given session 6 or 7 are present.
We are pleased to have a committee that is comprised of people from a variety of backgrounds. Several members of the committee have Kenan-Flagler MBAs and others have MBAs from other fine business schools. Some have graduate degrees in other areas, too.
About half the committee has previous corporate work experience.

问:在您眼里,申请人最重要的是什么?
答:The most important thing is for the applicant to present himself/herself honestly. After all, it is important that there be a fit.

问:请描述一下K-F的学生身上的三个特点?
答:Attributes we would like to see in KFBS students include being a team player, leadership potential, and highly motivated and proactive.
As admissions director, I must ensure that incoming KFBS MBA students have solid analytic and quantitative ability, strong leadership profiles, and are focused on an end goal.

问:过去有没有作假的申请案例?
答:In the 2+ years I've been here as AD, I have not witnessed fraud.
There are times it seems I'm reading essays that sound very much like ones I've read before.
Also, there are times when certain essays have different flows/writing styles from the rest of the applicant's essays. That always makes you wonder.
We know that applicants are presenting themselves in the best light they can. That is expected. Untruths are an issue, however. Generally we can confirm the real situations when we look at the letters of recommendation and [get] feedback from the interview.

问:KFBS 的在校生参与录取工作吗?
答: Students do not review applications or interview candidates at KFBS,
However, as the Chairperson for the Admissions Advisory Board, I organize several Admission related activities.
These activities include providing Student Greeters in the Admissions Office at all times so applicants can talk with students and ask questions. I also arrange for student/applicant lunches and tours of the school. Lastly, I help to coordinate the Welcome Weekend in April for admitted students.

问:KFBS 的强项是什么?
答:I believe we have a unique combination of a very rigorous program and a very supportive culture. Our students and alumni are passionate about the school, and are willing to help the school and one another in a way that I believe is very special.
We are located in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, so we are surrounded by and take advantage of relationships with such firms as Nortel, Cisco, Red Hat, IBM, etc...
I didn't answer the question before about what we are looking for, but my answer is similar to Rachel's and Sherry's: leadership potential, analytical skills, and interpersonal/communication skills.

问:请谈一下你们的申请截止日期?
答:Our third (of four) deadline is Jan 12th. This is the last deadline in which candidates have a chance to be considered for merit fellowships.
Our final deadline is first week of March, but it's possible that we could be very short on class space by the time we review fourth deadline candidates.

问:UNC在市场营销方面很强,并且与周边的高技术企业联系紧密。越来越多的管理咨询公司和投资银行正在成为你们毕业生的雇主.请您谈谈这些发展?
答: Our Office of Career Services has been working for several years to bring to campus a high percentage of the most desirable recruiters...
Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse First Boston, Morgan Stanley, McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Booz Allen, just to name a few.

问:班级的多样性如何?
答:In each of the past two incoming classes, the diversity has been evident. About a third female. A third are foreign nationals. Within the US citizen/perm resident population, about 25% are minority (African Amer, Hispan Amer, Asian Amer or Native Amer)
First year of school, students are assigned to a team. This team is very diverse with men, female, and international students. You work together the whole year on all assigned team project. Functional backgrounds for team members are also very diverse from marketing, finance, to entrepreneurs.

问:申请人数有所增加吗?
答:Applications increased 50% for the class of 2002. So far, we are seeing increases again for spots in the class of 2003
We have only 2 deadlines tallied at this point, and the first two deadlines usually comprise about 30 to 40% of the total applications we will receive.
It's hard to tell on the admissions side, but that could be part of our increase in apps. However, we started to see increased apps even before the world turned around last spring.
It's too early to predict how much the percent increase will be. Right now , it's up about 15%. The third deadline will be the most telling period since it is our largest volume deadline.

问:雇主们欢迎多样性的班级吗?尤其是国际学生较多?他们就业状况如何?
答: We are pleased that our international students are getting very favorable interest from the recruiters. While it is true that some companies do not hire foreign nationals, we are finding more and more who will.
Our office of career services has done an excellent job of educating many of our top employers on the relative ease of hiring foreign nationals.
With that said, I do want to stress that it is a bit more difficult for international students seeking employment in the U.S. than it is for domestic students. English language skills must be very strong in order for you to be successful. You also must do your homework and prepare well for the interviews.
Three years ago, international students were about 20% of the UNC MBA class. Now that we are at almost a third international, we have not seen a rise in the percentage of international students without job placements upon graduation.
I understand that international students tend to have more options for full-time employment than they have for internships. That is because hiring organizations often do not have as many internship opportunities to offer (especially consulting firms).

问:是不是更多毕业生择业时转向传统产业?
答: To some extent, although there is a considerable amount of interest in e-commerce work in larger firms. The dotcoms are only the tip of the iceberg for e-commerce placements.
We also have a fair number of people going into high-tech firms, in various functions, e.g. marketing, finance. HP, Intel, Microsoft, IBM, and many others along these lines are popular.

UNC MBA 房地产方向简介
因为在UNC同时修FINANCE和REALESTATE,即将毕业,看到很多同学问起美国房地产,简单介绍一下情况。
1. 美国RE的工作环境较为宽松。IB的RE除外,就我所知,每周35H是很正常的(每周大概都有小型聚餐或者HANGOUT,所以从40H里扣除)。
2. 刚毕业时,RE学生的BASESALARY并不是最高的,相比IB,CONSULTING。但RE的COMPENSATION比较特别,做开发的,大都有PARTNERSHIP。同时美国的RE由于MBA学生比较少,升职比较快。校友中3年内PUSH到DIRECTOR的不少见。在这个职位上,他们的COMPENSATION非常丰厚,不比IB,CONSULTING差,也许更丰厚。这点和国内很象。
3. 国际学生想找开发(DEVELOPMENT)的工作比较不容易,因为RE是很LOCAL的商业模式,需要对当地的人文,政府运行等非常熟悉。国际学生大都集中在房地产投资领域。
4. UNC RE PROGRAM的名声处上升状态。可以从来招聘公司看出,投资公司如MORGAN STANLEY,JP MORGAN,ING,FIDELITY,LEHMAN BROTHERS,GE COMMERCIAL都过来。开发公司如PULTE,CENTEX,HINES等等也经常来,前两者是美国第一和第二大HOME BUILDER。另外很多TOP REITS在UNC招人。做RE的对投资公司可能并不十分感兴趣,我知道同学中有人拒了JP MORGAN RE的OFFER,在找开发公司。
5. RE的招聘不象IB,CONSULTING非常有计划,这个行业对外比较保守,行业内人员流动并不强。所以找工作时不一定是ON-CAMPUS。
6. UNC的REPROGRAM,现有大约40多个学生选择该专业方向,UNC每年总共约280MBA学生。在TOP20里算是比较小的PROGRAM,小规模的好处是校友比较团结。校友团结的好处是他们需要人的时候会回到学校招聘。同时学生之间关系比较友善,不是非常COMPETITIVE。对国际学生而言,你从中得到的各种帮助会多一些。学习而言,RE PROGRAM跟RE行业一样,不是象FINANCE PROGRAM一样,HIGHLY STRUCTURED。如一门讲房地产开发的课从头到尾都是请各开发公司的人来上课。这样的好处是你可以得到第一手的经验,对很多希望毕业后自己做开发很有好处。对国际学生不是很有利的地方是,你学不到在中国做开发的经验。所以如果你决定回国做开发,还是得自学。
说得比较零散,请原谅。如果大家有问题,可以再后面跟贴。我在这周内会跟踪这个贴子,试着回答。因时间问题,我可能不能长期跟踪这个贴子。最后,祝大家MBA愉快!

A day at UNC
刚刚完成了class visit, school tour and interview,所以和大家分享一下感受。
上午11点钟是随堂听课。我和一个从印第安纳州来的女生被分配去听国际贸易课。教授非常友好和幽默,他一开始就宣布今天有两位客人,然后很夸张的说:"是两位啊,我们的访问者已经增加到两位了"。然后是让我们自我介绍,他又带头鼓掌欢迎,还嫌大家掌声不够响亮,蛮搞笑的。我感觉课堂气氛很活跃,大家都积极参加讨论。
中午学校安排的免费午餐,有4。5个一年纪或是二年纪的学生陪我们10个人吃饭,回答问题。学校想的很周到,提前都发邮件问我们饮食上有什么要求,所以让我这个素食者也不会碰到尴尬事。学校周到的连饮料都给我提供的不含咖啡因的,感动恩。学生们有问必答,让我印象很深的是他们提到UNC 和DUKE有协议,UNC的学生也可以选择在DUKE修一些课,都算学分(不过我没有再确认一下是不是修的MBA,至少应该是商学院的课罢)。另外就是2005班的就业前景很让人乐观,据说2006班乃至到2007班都会更好。学校的career service 非常帮忙,至少和我们谈话的二年纪学生非常满意。
今天来面试的一共10个左右,有个男生特别从日本东京飞过来面试,而且只申请了UNC一个学校,这个虔诚。。。。
1点钟是个漂亮的加州来的妹妹带我们参观学校。我感觉学校的设施很好,很多地方想得很周到。比如说每个MBA学生都享受一个橱柜。教学楼也比较新。
我的面试是在两点钟,是工作人员assistant director面试的。他面试的方式很随意,先让我讲我的工作经历,然后根据我讲的问问题,比如我认为我最大的成就是什么,有没有teamwork的心得,举个例子说明自己的领导才能。在这其中穿插着问为什么MBA,为什么UNC。最后看到我在美国有参加社区服务的经验,还问问我的心得和动机等等。这位面试官是很有经验的,他会始终控制着面试的节奏和方向。最后让我问问题。面试一共是35分钟,(之前他们的通知上就是说30-45分钟这个样子的。) 我提到了UNC的中国学生非常的热心,帮助申请人解答问题。面试官很高兴,他说他也知道中国来的MBA学生表现出很乐观积极的态度。
总的感觉对这个学校是打满分。Chapel Hill也是个很漂亮的小镇。大家开起车来还挺友好的,习惯了在austin的横冲直撞,到了这里感觉好象节奏慢了下来。剩下来得事情就是祈祷和耐心等待了。也祝其他的XDJM好运。

迟来的UNC电面
Buck Williams是个和蔼又有幽默感的好老头
电话持续了40分钟 事前也没怎么准备 完全随便说的

他基本没问"正经"的问题...

问了好多这样的:
中国有多少人? 答: 约14亿
哪个国家人最多? 答: 中国
你认为50年后哪个国家人最多? 答: 印度...
WHY? because they do not apply "one child policy"...

也简单问了些 why KF, what will you do 之类的问题,但提到的都不多
很多比较personal 的话题 基本是闲聊....

感觉发挥的还不错 估计我的面试已经是最晚的了吧...刚过了R3 也给我算在是R3了

UNC Kennan Flagler 电话面试
上来先自报家门,然后说只有resume,没有essay,这样可以更加公正的有2方面的评价,比较公平.

1. Brief introduce your intern and work experience.
2. why you go to us for an MBA study?
3. what are the aspects you will consider when you choose MBA program? How kennan Flagler fit your choice?
4. I saw xxx in your resume, what kind of achievement you made? What kind of leadership skills you obtained?
5. Any questions for me?

人很nice的, 蛮热情的. 大概说了35分钟左右. 她晚了4-5min 打电话给我.
但是后来想问啥时候出结果的时候,人家说人家已经有其他的schedule没时间再聊了, 我就祝她新年快乐就结束了.
UNC是申请就可以自己预约面试的. 希望大家好运.

UNC面经
1月21日晚上面的UNC。跟大家分享一下偶的面经。希望大家做的比我好!

约的时间是10点15,不过adcom貌似10点12就打过来了。整个interview持续了40分钟。对方应该是个大姐,风格比较严谨。上来就brief一下面试的安排,作用啥的。完全不给我机会跟伊寒暄或者开个玩笑啥的。她手里只有我的简历,所以问的问题基本是围绕我的简历来问。
1. tell me about your working experience with every company you have been with and the achievements or the most proud parts.估计这个问题是由于本人的工作经历比较丰富,才这么问的。我blah blah的讲了一堆。她问的很detail,涉及到很对细节。俺给她一一解释,告诉她背景和中国的环境等等。然后她追问每次换工作的原因。
2. career goal and why MBA
3. why UNC
4. strength& weakness
5. any questions(偶问了2个问题)

总之,第一次电面下来我的感觉是——太远了。看不到对方的表情,不知道她对你说的东东是不是感兴趣。还有,对方说话很快。另外,时间太短了,貌似我还有很多准备了的东东没有说。所以我觉得准备电面还是要多提炼总结自己的观点。

[分享]UNC 电面
晚了几分钟,面试官是个老头,自我介绍的时候说你可以把我当成你的grandpa,倒是减少我的几分紧张,也于是就放松了警惕。。。。
主要的问题还是很常规的:
1)go through resume, 每一次换工作的原因是什么,问得很细
2)对学校的了解。你从哪里了解到学校的信息,有哪些concentrations,你对学校的哪些方面最感兴趣
3)毕业之后打算做什么工作,在哪里工作,是不是首选在美国工作,是否将来一定会回中国工作
4)业余时间的爱好
5)问了一些学校里参加的社团活动,以及毕业之后有没有继续此类的活动
6)你在工作中的优势是什么。
7)你的哪些方面让你对自己最为满意。
8)还问了一些关于中国经济和房地市场趋势的话题(因为我是做房地产的)
9) 对他提问。我问了关于经济危机对于Internship的影响,他说未来两年形势都不乐观,但是他们也在尽可能的努力为学生创造机会;还问了关于Loan,他说是可以解决的,给了我一个负责loan的人的email; 此外我还向他要了北京的校友的联系方式,他也很痛快地给了。
主要问题就是这些,觉得自己回答的还算清楚,但是有些细节问题自己很stupid......
比如他冷不丁问我北京上海有多少人口,因为我是做房地产的,一下没想起来(学艺不精阿),但是至少知道是1000多万,但是当时太紧张,说成了1000......他很惊,说你是想说million么。。。。然后他就胡说了两个数误导我,还装作很肯定地样子,北京的附和了他结果错了,但是上海实在太不靠谱,纠正了他,老头太阴险了。。。接下去他还问你知道世界上人口最多的国家是哪里么。。我说是中国,他很兴奋的说:不,是印度。。。。再次觉得很崩溃,只好扯了一下计划生育政策掩饰了一下
这个问题觉得很不好,可能会觉得我不够professional......也太stupid......郁闷阿。。。对了,我还情急之下把GDP说成了GPA。。。。也没有纠正,他也没有纠正我。。。。
不过最后他说了句: If you have a journey to school, remember to say Hi to me........不知道是有些机会还是彻底把我给否了(journey...貌似只有观光的份了)

UNC面经
废话
偶系懒人一个,从去年准备到今年,考了一个巨烂无比的GMAT, 然后折腾到现在就交了这么一个学校。一直在潜水,因为GMAT太烂,想发jj怕误导人家,总算逮到今天。。面试我的问题我总记下没错吧。。。嗯。。所以发一篇积攒人品。。。
面试准备了一个晚上,下班回来看了一遍交出去的essay,后两篇都不敢读下去了。。。真是烂。。anyway。硬着头皮上了。
开始
面试在11点,准时,绝对的准时,电话就来了。
面试官是peggy。后来查到背景是HR的。。难怪非常professional。。一直可着劲的夸。。我自己都觉得自己磕磕巴巴的,最后还画蛇添足的说自己太紧张了不好意思,还夸我说,感觉不到你紧张啊。。很好。。一句俗话说什么“A good interviewer will make you go home with a feeling that you have done well”。虽然表现很烂,但是面完了就是这个感觉。。对方很仔细的听,很主动的给你反馈“en ah good”,其中俺们关于工作内容讲的不清楚,人还帮我总结了一遍。。惭愧惭愧
又开始废话了:(
好了,面试问题 -》 她手里只会有你的简历。感觉之前也没怎么读。就是想哪问哪。问题很常规,也不会sharp.. 有逻辑就行。
(1) 你大学在中国读的啊,然后到新加坡读Phd. 为啥大学选**major啊? 为啥后面去新加坡读phd 啊?
(2) 读完PHD为啥去***啊。 (后悔没把公司吹一下,人家不知道)
(3) 那你工作是干嘛的?工作中最让你骄傲的项目?
(4) 课余活动很多嘛。。课余活动最让你骄傲的是?
(5) 这都是工作,之外我想更加了解你,讲一下你的性格啊,人啊,爱好啊
(6) 创业的方向是什么?
(7) 为什么选KFBS?
(8)有什么问题么?我问了奖学金和loan,她说现在为止还没问题。。。
(9) 有什么我没有问到,你想让我知道的?
就这些吧。。27分钟。。我倒后来还扯了点闲话,天气啊什么的。。挺nice的一个人。还到过新加坡,中途告诉我去过bird park,raffles place.
反正自己挺兴奋的,打了鸡血一般。。。本来英文就七颠八倒的,更是了。。。
sigh, 等结果吧。。。这一写完,兴奋劲没了,发现很多地方还是答的不好。cross my finger and wait~~~

最后想说,不管我能不能被UNC录取。。
这个学校我真的很推荐。虽然排名不是最top的,但是人真的很nice。你可以感受到招生的人对你的重视和关心。所有的email都是很快的回复。而且不光这个面试官,所有的人都是很helpful 和nice 态度。....很好的customer service 的典范啊。。
我联系了他们的校友sidney, 也很nice和patient,对我无聊弱智的问题也耐心解答。
我相信,这种culture 会是一个很好的team work 的环境。在这里生活2年,也会是一个快乐的经历:)
汇报完毕。。。大家都好运。。。保佑我拿到这个offer吧。。第一轮里的唯一一个啊~~~
