OG 12 CR 107 124

107. Last year all refuse collected byShelbyville city services was incinerated. This incineration generated a large quantityof residual ash. In order to reduce the amount of residual ash Shelbyvillegenerates this year to half of last year's total, the city has revamped itscollection program. This year city services will separate for recycling enoughrefuse to reduce the number of truckloads of refuse to be incinerated to halfof last year's number.
Which of the following is required for therevamped collection program to achieve its aim?
A.       This year, no materials thatcity services could separate for recycling will be incinerated.
B.       Separating recyclable materialsfrom materials to be incinerated will cost Shelbyville less than half what it costlast year to dispose of the residual ash.
C.       Refuse collected by cityservices will contain a larger proportion of recyclable materials this yearthan it did last year.
D.       The refuse incinerated thisyear will generate no more residual ash per truckload incinerated than did the refuseincinerated last year.
E.        The total quantity of refusecollected by Shelbyville city services this year will be no greater than that collectedlast year.
提问:之前有nn的解答是residual ash per truckloak * number of truckloads = total ofresidual ash,思路很明了选D,理解了。可是我脑子还是转不过来——如何排除A选项呢?我的意思是,如果refuse separated for recycling也会被incinerated,那么,即使保证residualash per truckloak * number of truckloads的总量<1/2,从separated的那部分也会产生ash啊。。。

124. Museums that house Renaissance oilpaintings typically store them in environments that are carefully kept within narrowmargins of temperature and humidity to inhibit any deterioration. Laboratorytests have shown that the kind of oil paint used in these paintings actuallyadjusts to climatic changes quite well. If, as some museum directors believe, paint is the most sensitive substance in these works, then by relaxing thestandards for temperature and humidity control, museums can reduce energy costswithout risking damage to these paintings. Museums would be rash to relax thosestandards, however, since results of preliminary tests indicate that gesso, acompound routinely used by Renaissance artists to help paint adhere to thecanvas, is unable to withstand signifi cant variations in humidity.
In the argument above, the two portions inboldface play which of the following roles?
A.       The first is an objection thathas been raised against the position taken by the argument; the second is the positiontaken by the argument.
B.       The first is the position takenby the argument; the second is the position that the argument calls into question.
C.       The first is a judgment thathas been offered in support of the position that the argument calls into question;the second is a circumstance on which that judgment is, in part, based.
D.       The first is a judgment thathas been offered in support of the position that the argument calls into question;the second is that position.
E.        The first is a claim that theargument calls into question; the second is the position taken by the argument.

提问:bf1:在组成这些画的元素里面,颜料是最敏感最容易坏的元素;bf2:博物馆不需要那么严格的温度和湿度控制,所以可以省钱。
我不明白为神马说bf1是in support of bf2的,难道是说颜料已经是最敏感的部分了也可以ajdust to climatic changes quite well所以更不需要保护?我绕不过去绕不过去啊,等牛牛们起床解答。。。谢谢!!

For 124, your understanding is right. The directors thought that the paint can adjust; the painst is the most sensitive; if the most sensitive component can adjust, the whole painting is safe; let's relax the standard!

What the director missed is that something else other than the paint is very sensitive to humidity change. Thus the standard should not be relaxed.
