“work experience" at Wharton at least refers to "work experience after graduating from college".

That doesn't mean your work experience is not valid- it is, and should be reflected in your essays. But when you report the numbers of work experience you have, any work experience before graduating from college is not considered. Not that it really matters that much- this is just for statistical keeping purposes.
