Q：为什么E选项是错误的？
附上我不太明白的prep语法笔记中的解释：
(E)伴随状语使用错误,有作后置定语修饰temperature的歧义存在；possibly使用错误

serving在后面做状语，要么伴随，要么表结果。
这里number...rises and fells与serving没有伴随的关系，并不是同时发生的
表结果也不好，并不是说number rises and fells in order to serve as a  thermometer

事实上，这里是对number of chirps的描述，用and最佳

所谓的修饰歧义，大概是想说serving有存在作定语的嫌疑。
Prep笔记中这个说法，我不是很喜欢，有些太概括了。
Manhattan中说，Present Participle without comma是作为Noun modifier；Present Participle with comma是Verb-Modifier

不过语法笔记这么说也不无道理：Prep笔记强调很多次，【，V-ing】从未失去做定语的功能，只是优先做状语而已。
就是在判断做状语不合适的时候，看看它做定语是不是合理，如果也不合理，就排除。

这个语法点还是在做题的时候不要太纠结了，用其他split大部分时候就能选出正确答案

我说说我的理解吧 先理解句意 句子意思是说每分钟的次数(n.)can serve as a  thermometer(n) 而不是说前面整句话所包含的意义可以导致serving as a thermometer这个结果 弄明白这个以后 也就知道那些所谓修饰对象模糊 这样修饰不好这类的话其实主要还是因为表意不如D选项好了

利用今天看到的manhattan解題思路：

（1）選項開始處屬於verb modifiers，infinitive of purpose表達了verb的目的。讀完句子后，覺得attract是use的目的，因而排除ABC
（2）D項，it指代優選subject，指代正確，句子沒有明顯錯誤，pass；
（3）E項，present participle作為verb modifiers，有2點要求：
   A、subject與present modifier must logically make sense;
      B、verb modifiers modify verb. 就是說verb modifiers能夠answer questions about the verb (how, when, where, why..)

對於上A，數量serve as thermometer, make sense；
對於上B，考慮serve對rise and fall的修飾作用。serve沒能回答rise and fall的方式，時間，地點等相關問題。因而沒有modify的作用。所以E錯。
