321. That the new managing editor rose from the publication's "soft" news sections to a leadership position is more of a landmark in the industry than her being a woman.
A.
B.being a woman is
C.her womanhood
D.that she was a woman
E.that she is a woman

she is a woman是一个事实,用is不用was.

265.Research during the past several decades on the nature of language and the processes (that produce and make it understandable has revealed great complexity) instead of underlying simplicity.
A.
B.of producing and understanding it have revealed not underlying simplicity but great complexity
C.by which it is produced and understood has revealed not underlying simplicity but great complexity
D.by which it is produced and understood have revealed great complexity rather than underlying simplicity
E.by which one produces and understands it have revealed great complexity instead of underlying simplicity

初看此题,以为考not...but, rather than, instead of 三者优先关系,故选C,请问谁能分析A/C两个答案的优劣?

A. produce 和make 是平行的关系,都是及物动词,"it understandable"是produce 和make的共同宾语,但是produce it understandable讲不通
C.it is produced and understood

good point!!! I read the questions more than once, and still neglect the trap: procude it and make it understandable (the first "it" can't be omited to prevent confuse)

A C 里的it都是指代nature

我认为,应该按照传统语法,跳过中间修饰成分(during the past several decades on the nature of language and the processes)直接指代research。

208.
{Originally developed for detecting air polluants, a technique called proton-induced x-ray emmission, which can quickly analyze the chemical elements in almost any substance without destroying it,} is finding uses in medicine, archaeology, and criminology.
A.
B.Originally developed for detecting air pollutants, having the ability to analyze the chemical elements in almaost any substance without destroying it, a technique called proton induced x-ray emission
C.A technique originally developed for detecting air pollutants, called proton-induced x-ray emission, which can quickly analyze the chemical elements in almost any substance without destroying it,
D.A technique originally developed for detecting air pollutants, called proton-induced x-ray emission, which has the ability to analyze the chemical elements in almost any substance quickly and without destroying it,
E.A technique that was originally developed for detecting for detecting air pollutants and has the ability to analyze the chemical elements in almost any substance quickly and without destroying the substance, called proton-induce x-ray emission,

Why E is incorrect? How to analyze?

214.
The technical term"pagination" {is a process that leaves editors, instead of printers, assemble} the page images that become the metal or plastic plates used in printing.

B. refers to a process that allows editors, rather than printers, to assemble
C. is a process leaving the editors, rather than printers, to asssemble

Why C is incorrect?

218.
The aristocratic values expressed in the writings of Marguerite Yourcenar place her within the French classical tradition, {as does} her passionate interest in history, particularly Roman history.
A. as does
B. so do
C. as do
D. so is the case with
E. similarly, does

Why the answer is A?

225.
Slaes of United States manufactrued goods to nonindustrialized countried rose to $167 billion in 1992,{ which is 14percent more than the previous year }and largely offsets weak demand from Euroope and Japan.
D. an amount that is 14 percent more than the previous year was
E an amount that is 14 percent higher than the previous year's figure

Why D is incorrct?

238.
{Very popular from 1900 until the 1920's, the renewed interest in ceiling fans began} when the energy crisis in 1974 f9rced homeowners to look for alternative methods of heating and cooling.
A.
B. The renewed interest in ceiling fans, which were very popular from 1910 until the 1920's began
C. After they were very popular from 1900 until the 1920's, the renewed interest in ceiling fans was beginning
D. Ceiling fans were very popular from 1900 until the 1920's, with renewed interest beginning in them
E. From 1900 until the 1920's ceiling fans were very popular, and now the renewed interest in them has begun

Why b is correcct and e is incorrect?
*****************************************
*****************************
My personal Explanation:
208.
The Correct Ans. is (A).
E is not right because, first, “called proton-induced x-ray emission” maybe wrongly placed there, it will confused us that the “substance” is “called proton-induced x-ray emission”.

214.
The Correct Ans. is (B).
C is wrong: “the term is a process” does not make sense, should like this: “A refers to B”; and, “leaving” clause’s logic subject is “the term”, so, wrong.

218.
The Correct Ans. is (A).
First, “her passionate interest” is single form N., needs single form V., so only “does” in (A) and (E) match; (E) is obviously wrong for the awkward “similarly”, and the wrong sequence of the sentence.
Be careful of the usage of “AS” and “SO”. If the (B) is like this: “so does”, we also can pick it as right one.
Chewing these:
“The aristocratic values place her within Classical, as does her interest.”
“The aristocratic values place her within Classical, so does her interest.”

225.
The Correct Ans. is (E).
D is wrong because, first, we cannot say “a amount is more than …” we should say “greater/higher than, etc.”; Secondly, “a mount more than the year was” is really awkward. The two parts of Comparison should be parallel! Top important!

238.
The Correct Ans. is (B).
E is incorrect. First because “From 1900until the 1920’s” is awkward and wordy, we should say “From 1900 to … ”; Second reason is that “has begun” has no reason to be here: have/has + V.p.p. should be with “a period” in which the V. lasted and till now.

Hope it is clear. Have any more questions, pls feel free to contact with me. Let’s discuss and grow up together.

225题,an amount与high/great搭配不与more搭配。
238题,victor兄弟的解释中,第一点说"from 1900until the 1920's"与"from 1900 to ...."

Just saw two similiar problems on this board today. By "similiar" I mean:

prep. phrase, + prep phrase (at the beginning of the sentence and with no "AND/OR" linking them), subject+V (constituting the main sentence) is weired and must be wrong.

In C, "which" is separated by so so many words from "the technique", isn't it unfriendly to you? Compare A with C... you digest it

225
I don't think it's the issue of "higher amount" or "more amount", but that of "higher percentage" or "more percentage". Apparently, "14 percent higher" is more idiomatic. So, for percent(age), higher or lower; for amount, I'm not sure.Does the sentence below make sense to you?

The amount of water in the left cup is more than that in the right cup.

Sales rose to $167 million, an amount that is 14% higher than the previous year's figure (was).
"the previous year" can't be compared with the "amount", but "an amount that is 14% higher than that in the previous year was" should be ok bah (so TANG SENG though)

238.
Other choices are either inidiomatic or non-logical due to "interest were popular"

To jastag, would you please explain details about 238? i still can not understand.

1."would be insecure" is more accurate than "was insecure" since it's just the expectation of the French.

351.
In 1929 relatively small declines in the market ruined many (speculators having bought on margin; they had to sell, and) their selling pushed other investors to the brink.
A.
B.speculators who had bought on margin; having had to sell,
C.speculators who had bought on margin; they had to sell, and
D.speculators, those who had bought on margin; these speculators had to sell, and
E.speculators, who, having bought on margin and having to sell,

Hehehe...
如果你操作过FX(Foreign Exchange),你就会对此题非常敏感,而且绝对选C.

Only My opinion!

No244,why use "establishing"
(My opinion)
A.不对;一个句子里不能有两个主谓结构,除非加and;
C, D, E把同位语变成了目的从句,没有理由;

(My opinion)
从句和主句之间并没有转折关系的需要,A, B, C中用转折连词没有理由;

(My opinion)
所以“in deciding at it founding in 1833 to accept…”
B用for the decision显然没有in deciding好,因为是“决定招收男女学生”这件事而被认为是renegade的,并非决定本身;同理C也错。

250,why choice A?
(My opinion)
首先还是要理解句子的意思:“那种研究方式还不具备可操作性”。B的句意正好相反,错;
一般用so…that句型而少用so…as to。C中的 “for such studies as this”表达方式有误,同时“to have …”

243, why not choice A?
(My opinion)
