Professional Communication & Professional Development

The best business leaders are great communicators and consummate professionals. The Professional Communication and Professional Development courses provide you with guidance and practice in the "soft" skill areas that recruiters seek out in the MBA candidates they hire.

In the Professional Communication course, you will have focused opportunities to practice your presentation skills, persuasive speaking, and leading and facilitating teams. Through the Professional Development course, you will learn the skills you need to effectively showcase your talents in interviews, in networking opportunities and in your everyday business interactions.

Leadership Development

Leader development at Goizueta is not a series of discrete events, but a coherent process of individual development and growth over time.

Course Options

At Goizueta, we recognize you as an individual, which is why we offer our students a variety of options to tailor coursework to fit their unique career goals. Because of our intimate, educational community, classes are small and faculty and students work closely. This also means we can be flexible, giving you the opportunity to design a course of study to best suit you. Each concentration encompasses a range of core classes and electives, and students have the opportunity to further customize their coursework through directed studies with faculty to courses with other Emory institutions to study abroad opportunities.

Concentrations & Electives

In response to the dynamic business world, Goizueta offers 23 different concentrations – within six academic areas – in both established and emerging topics. Electives provide students the opportunity to pursue specific areas of study beneficial to a particular career.

One-Year MBA students will choose 10 electives during their program. Two-Year MBA students will select 13 electives during their program, including four prior to the summer internship, therefore maximizing the return from the internship experience. Directed Study

Because Goizueta is an intimate learning community, you can work closely with faculty, and customize your MBA to fit your goals. If you have a specific interest in a topic that isn’t taught in one of your courses, you can create your own course under the Directed Study option. You develop your idea for a directed study, propose the project, and partner with a faculty member to complete your work.

Through the directed study option, you work collaboratively with experienced faculty and learn how to transform abstract theoretical questions into workable projects, publishable in major journals. Through this interaction, you learn the research norms and values that will guide you through today’s global business landscape.

Directed Study gives you the freedom to tailor your learning experience to your goals.

Joint Degree Programs

For those seeking a broader educational base, we offer joint-degree programs at Emory University with the Emory Law School, the Emory School of Medicine, the Rollins School of Public Health, and the Candler School of Theology. Joint degree students must spend 3 semesters at Goizueta Business School to complete the MBA portion of the joint degree. Joint degree students earn both degrees only when both programs have been completed. See below for more specific information on curriculum requirements.

Internships

The CMC takes a holistic approach in preparing students for their summer internship search. Before students arrive on campus they are surveyed to provide the CMC with information on industry, company and functional preferences. This information is then used to help shape our corporate outreach and student preparation strategies. Once students arrive on campus preparation begins through seminars, conferences, corporate visits, peer groups, counseling, etc. After rigorous preparation students participate in interviews both on and off campus and we are proud to say that for the last six years we have had a 100% placement rate for internships.

"Real-world" experience
Hear what a previous student says about her internship experience:

"Prior to coming to Goizueta, I was employed at Kenneth Cole because I wanted to work in the fashion industry. So I was thrilled when I obtained an internship at Revlon in New York City, allowing me to continue with my passion for this business. During my time there, I began to understand the undeniable value of these leadership, communication, and presentation skills.

We also participated in a lunch series with members of Revlon's senior management. One after another, when probed to give advice on what they wish they had known right out of business school, each confirmed how important communication and leadership skills are. Fortunately, Goizueta already knows this and makes it a priority to instill each of us with this knowledge. As I return to work full-time in New York for L'Oreal, I know I have the confidence and skill sets I need to ensure my success in today's challenging business world."
