Argument 11
In this political editorial the author asserts that that the residents of San Perdito would be best served if they
voted Montoya, the concurrent Mayor, out of office and elect the former Mayor Varro.
This argument is unconvincing for several reasons:
1) The argument commits the fallacy of "After this, therefore because of this ":
Montoya's election came before the decrease in population and the increase in unempolyment rate. This reasoning
is problematic unless other possible causal explanations have been considered and ruled out.
2) The argument assumes that the Varro's leadership is the cause of the economic improvement. However, the mere
fact that Varro's election precedes the economic boom is not sufficient to justify this assumption.
3) The reasons cited for the author's recommendation have obviously been oversimplified, hence, we can not rule
out the possiblility that the author is using political rhetorices affecting the electorates' emotion and
misleading their judgement.
