First of all, I am not a NN. After examing all those answers, I think only C can be right.

As the honeybee’s stinger is heavily barbed, staying where it is inserted, this results in the act of stinging causing the bee to sustain a fatal injury.

A, this can not be the subject alone.

B. there is no subject in the second part of the sentence.

C. both heavily barbed and staying where... are stand alone structures. Both of them describe the stinger. It can not be parallel since one is an adjective and the other one is -ing. But it is perfect legal here.

D. results in the act..... is wrong. It should be results in the fact that.....

E. it doesn't make sense. it should be sth. results in...

heavily barbed and staying where it is inserted是修饰The honeybee’s stinger的，a中的this不能指代前面的所有内容，b，d中的it指代honeybee，b没有构成句子，d中的stinger不能做results的主语，e中的The honeybee’s stinger不能做with the result的逻辑主语
