"No one can possibly achieve any real and lasting success or 'get rich' in business by conforming to conventional practices or ways of thinking."
argument 38
The following appeared as part of an article in the business section of a local newspaper.
"Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for over 70 years. Although one foreign company has copied the motorcycle and is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers - some say because its product lacks the exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. But there must be some other explanation. After all, foreign cars tend to be quieter than similar American-made cars, but they sell at least as well. Also, television advertisements for motorcycle X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness, and the ads typically have voice-overs or rock music rather than engine-roar on the sound track."作者: apan 时间: 2003-3-18 10:36
This argument is unconvincing for it bases on three gratuitous assumptions.
Assumption 1:
By increasing occupancy rates for campus housing will boost the housing revenues.
Assumption 2:
Lowering the rents will necessarily bring about the increase of housing revenues.
Assumption 3:
The current rental rates are the sole reason why the students choose not to live on campus.
None of the assumptions are supported by any evidence in this argument.作者: gladys 时间: 2003-3-18 14:32
Issue 81:
Stance:
I agree with the above stated opinion to the extent that business lacking capability of innovation and creativity and conforming strictly to conventional practices or ways of thinking can hardly remain competitive in the business world. A successful enterpreneur needs to identify and utilize the values of conventional practices as well as to be sensitive to innovation and creativity.作者: joywzy 时间: 2003-3-18 15:00
