Referring to the dictionary, I found that the prep added after superiority is "over"..

the key issue is : no passive voice can be used on word

rove, to be proven is unidiomatic. superior to is idiomatic and origin answer is better.

proved用的就是被动语态，省略了was

"and its superiority over the horse had been"-- had been时态不对
