Answer:

I don't know why E is the right answer? how to differentiate the use of "numbers" and "number" in a sentence? I just remembered that
the number of +subject (pl.) + v. (simple)

numbers 有一群群的意思。另外这个题考的是 by ..., by ..., and by...的平行结构。
