1. The Wallerstein study indicates that even after a decade young men and women still experience some of the effects of a divorce occurring when a child.

(A) occurring when a child

(B) occurring when children

(C) that occurred when a child

(D) that occurred when they were children

(E) that has occurred as each was a child

Choice D is best. The phrasing a divorce that occurred when they were children correctly uses the relative clause that occurred to modify a divorce and includes a pronoun and verb (they were) that refer unambiguously to their antecedent, men and women. Choice A incorrectly introduces the when... phrase with occurring, thus illogically making divorce the grammatical referent of when a child; furthermore, the singular child does not agree with the plural men and women. B replaces child with children but otherwise fails to correct A's errors of structure and logic, and C corrects only the error created by occurring. Choice E includes an incorrect verb tense (has occurred) and wrongly replaces when with as. Also, each was does not properly refer to men and women.

非画线部分: young men and women 复数still experience some of the effects复数 of a divorce

按照其他题目的思路:a divorce用法应该是错的,似乎是说那些男人女人仍然经历着同一场离婚的后果

但由于是非画线部分,只能理解成为a divorce泛指婚姻.

但其他og的题目却有明确考过这种"复数主语+单数名词"引起所有人做同一件事的歧义

61. The Gorton-Dodd bill requires that a bank disclose to their customers how long they will delay access to funds from deposited checks.

(A) that a bank disclose to their customers how long they will delay access to funds from deposited checks

(B) a bank to disclose to their customers how long they will delay access to funds from a deposited check

(C) that a bank disclose to its customers how long it will delay access to funds from deposited checks

(D) a bank that it should disclose to its customers how long it will delay access to funds from a deposited check

(E) that banks disclose to customers how long access to funds from their deposited check is to be delayed

Choice C is best. In A and B, the plural pronouns their and they do not agree with the singular noun bank. B, like D and E, illogically shifts from the plural customers and funds to the singular check, as if the customers were jointly depositing only one check. In D, requires a bank that it should is ungrammatical; requires that a bank is the appropriate idiom. In E, the use of the passive construction is to be delayed is less informative than the active voice because the passive does not explicitly identify the bank as the agent responsible for the delay.

请大家讨论下关于这种前后矛盾怎么看?

effects与young man and woman 单复数对应

a divorce 意思是一次离婚,也就是发生在童年的一场离婚,并不是同一次离婚的意思啊,并不需要与young man and woman对应,如果是复数只说明他父母离了几次婚。而且a是不定惯词,没有限定的作用。

yang mm's question is very representative of the kind of logic that ets choose. really,it is quite difficult to deal with. i agree with you that there may be some kind of mistakes or ,at least, peccadilloes in the reasoning of these questions.anyway, there are explanations, although not perfect ones.there is normally only one divorce for the parents of each man and women mentioned, and divorces are alike because they are general reference.and when in use,the word divorce is in most cases an uncountable noun.on the contrary, the word check is a countable noun and when refering to more than one check,it is usually in its plural form.

so i think it may be the differences, but not that convincing.

我觉得很多英语的表达从中文解释来看是没有歧义的,但是英文上来看,是有的.

就象这个 that banks disclose to customers how long access to funds from their deposited check is to be delayed

这里的歧义是their check以引起的,ets说as if the customers were jointly depositing only one check

og1也是这样

a divorce that occurred when they were children 你看定语从句是限定作用的,就是特制那一场离婚they were children我的疑问是从这个角度来的啊

单数名词+复数定语问题,继续讨论
