Many prospective MBA students believe that applications are reviewed using a secret process that mysteriously produces a select group of candidates who will receive an offer of admission. In reality, successful applicants are chosen through a comprehensive and thorough review process that spans a six-month period and four application rounds.
All applications to the Berkeley MBA program are read by at least two -- and often as many as four -- readers. If the first two readers agree that an application is not competitive, the review process ends. In all other cases, an application file goes on to one of the directors for a third review. Applicants who remain in consideration after the third review are invited for an interview, which is conducted by a trained student interviewer on campus or by one of our alumni interviewers around the world. Since applications are reviewed in random order, an interview invitation may be extended at any time between the application deadline and the response date. Once the interview report has been received, the application is discussed at the next meeting of the admissions committee. Decisions are released on or near the scheduled response date. Applicants who are placed on the waitlist are offered an opportunity to interview as well, if they have not done so already.
We’re proud of our application review process, which is designed to ensure that all applications receive a fair and thorough review, resulting in the best possible entering MBA class. We look forward to having the opportunity to review each of your applications!
