首先句子中有两个动词was，所以必须有连词。感觉GMAT中except通常理解作介词不作连词，所以 A, B,E排除。用excepting for+名词在句首通常表明此名词和主语是同类，这里明显the domains 和the English language不是一类事物而是和the island可比。所以选C. excepting for除...之外（被排除的概念）。
