Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year
than last because refi ners are paying about $5 a
barrel more for crude oil than they were last year.
(A) Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this
year than last because refi ners are paying about
$5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were
(B) Heating-oil prices are expected to rise higher
this year over last because refi ners pay about
$5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did
(C) Expectations are for heating-oil prices to be
higher this year than last year’s because refi ners
are paying about $5 a barrel for crude oil more
than they did
(D) It is the expectation that heating-oil prices will be
higher for this year over last because refi ners
are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil
now than what they were
(E) It is expected that heating-oil prices will rise
higher this year than last year’s because refi ners
pay about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than
they did

这题选A,想知道A选项中的last 后面为什么可以省略"prices in last year"??  很多比较结构不是一定强调对比的内容一定要可比吗?到底什么时候可以省,什么时候需要写"than that of XXX 或者than XXX's; 说实话,当初我感觉每个答案都错,因为后面几个选项中rise和 higher意思重复,但这点OG上没提...

The roads are much quieter in Xiamen than (the roads are) in Shanghai.
如果比较的对象两者 主语 和 谓语 都相同,那么主语 和 谓语 就可以省略。只保留状语,lz可以翻一下语法书。
此题同理。
有 than that of XXX 的 一定是 比较 宾语。

完全可以是last two years, etc. 难道英语里面经常有这样的用法吗? 我只见过形容词+the可以表示一类人或事物,从没见过如此这般省略的形式,求高人指点。

这个地方的省略应该是they were(主谓语一致);但个人觉得由于时态变了,这种省略是不是可行的需要商榷。最理想的答案补出helping verb:they were 比较好。
MANHATTAN里应该清楚说明在不同的tense时态中,是要用the working verb的

千行OG里有:

TWO INSTANCES IN WHICH YOU CAN'T JUST USE A NOUN:

1) VERB TENSE SHIFT

if there is a change in verb tense between the two halves of the comparison, then you MUST include the verb in both halves. (if the verb is omitted in the second part of the comparison, then the implication is that the tense is the same in both halves.)

so:
Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than they were last year
--> correct
BUT
if you wrote
Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last year
then this would be incorrect, since there must be a tense shift between what is happening this year and what happened last year.

2) AMBIGUITY

i know more about shakespeare than my brother
ambiguous. 2 meanings.

又有联想(见千行OG):

个人见解:

并列句也就是所谓的two independent clause,而比较句是一个independent clause里面内置的比较结构

一个是两个句子,一个是一个句子;所以,可能是为了清晰或者unambiguous,第一个的helping verb的补出在

时态不一致的情况下,是要补出 exact working verb

open to discussion
