那是the use of sth to be…还是the use of sth as呢？两个用法有什么区别？

这个不应该是题目中的主要考点。我曾经见过有的语法机警讨论，而在真正的考试中，哪个列出的机警考点跟本就不用考虑。
就这题的两个用法我曾在OG中见到the use of sth as

我怎么觉得答案应该是for use in place of，因为我理解的句意是：代替书本来用，而不是“用它们来代替书本”。哪个意思更好呢？
