See the parallelism? "the tenth" corresponds to "the" - this is why we need "the" at the beginning and thus narrow down to C and D.
Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth ...

我明白了~~我记得你以前跟我说过的一道比较:more babies were born to women over the age of thirty than were born under it这是错的，因为有三个元素born、women、under the age of 30，跳过第二个直接关联第一个和第三个就不make sense.
这里同样也是直接越过tenth不make sense~~果然相同的知识点无所不在~~
我知道the largest and oldest是对的，今天看了半天都觉得the most的the怎么着省略了都怪异，听你一讲全明白了~~
in general, here are some indicators that you've actually mastered a problem:
* can you explain it to someone else (who at least understands the underlying concepts)?
* can you solve it in more than one way?
* can you write a similar problem of your own? (not so similar that it's essentially the same problem with different numbers, but similar enough that it uses the same sort of concepts)
这题所要表达的意思就是：飓风H成为袭击美国的第十个最强烈的飓风和从1969年起最强烈的飓风。这里要表达一个从1969年至今的延续，since明显好于after，BD错。E选项reverse the order，就显得很awkward，特别还是在平行结构中。（GMAT中reverse the order一般都被视为awkward，能用正常语序表达就用正常语序，能用主动就别用被动。）
再看AC：句子主干是：AS….，it …..，becoming the tenth most intense hurricane…and most intense… 形容最高级前面要加the大家都知道，A选项的意思是平行结构把the给省略了，但是这里不能省略。为什么呢？因为前面的the 与most intense之间还有一个tenth啊！省略的必须是相同而且可以make sense的意群，并且不可以跳跃结构来省略。
如果这里是：the most intense hurricane…. and most intense….就可以（当然这样此处逻辑意思是不通的，我只是说一下这个语法），好比the largest and oldest living organism on Earth，是可以的。
