Having made up my mind to apply to B-schools for the Fall 2006 term, I'm faced with a situation that some others here have probably faced or are facing now - Why go for the Top 5 MBA (Top 7 if you will)?
I'm not interested in IB or MC but would like to go for a General Management career, preferably a rotational program in an internationally focused firm. I'm looking at the cost numbers in the Top-5 and they are staggering (more than $160K!). It makes sense for someone interested in IB or MC to go to the Top-5 because the big firms in those sectors recruit in droves.
So why do people who are not interested in IB/MC strive to get into the Top-5? Do these schools offer something that few others can? Is the cachet worth the initial financial setback - especially if you are interested in what are on average - lower paying jobs as opposed to Wall Street or MC jobs?
Your opinions are appreaciated!
I would say that another key reason why many people like to tend top-5 schools is the need they have for ego boosting.
This is just my opinion...shooting for the best school is not for ego...for me it is an investment. Top schools just provide more opportunity...more recruiters. etc.
