答案B中what充当什么成分？
我理解前面in which 中which 指代的是an age，那后面的what指代的是什么的？
没有读明白，求各位牛人释惑

areas,因为那个areas那个时候不是temperate的。

那还原出来是不是 in which great ice sheets existed in areas that are now temperate areas这样的话和后面的areas不重复吗？我以为应该写成......existed in areas that are now temperate.
所以好纠结...

in sth that和in what可以互换

举个例子
i like things that she likes. i like what she likes
都代表了我喜欢她所喜欢的东西

还不是很清楚啊，如果what 是指area 那句子中为什还有what... area?

因为area和area不同啊，那时候的area不temperate, 现在的area temperate
