GWD-8-Q33:

Inorder to withstand tidal currents, juvenile horseshoe crabs frequently burrowin the sand. Such burrowing discourages barnacles from clinging to theirshells. When fully grown, however, the crabs can readily withstand tidalcurrents without burrowing, and thus they acquire substantial populations ofbarnacles. Surprisingly, in areas where tidal currents are very weak, juvenilehorseshoe crabs are found not to have significant barnacle populations, eventhough they seldom burrow.
Whichof the following, if true, most helps to explain the surprising finding?
A.    Tidalcurrents do not themselves dislodge barnacles from the shells of horseshoecrabs.
B.    Barnaclesmost readily attach themselves to horseshoe crabs in areas where tidal currentsare weakest.
C.    Thestrength of the tidal currents in a given location varies widely over thecourse of a day.
D.    Avery large barnacle population can significantly decrease the ability of ahorseshoe crab to find food.
E.     Untilthey are fully grown, horseshoe crabs shed their shells and grow new onesseveral times a year.
