Diabetes, together with its serious complications, ranks as the nation's third leading cause of death, surpassed only by heart disease and cancer.

此题真确选项我做的出。想问下：
1.此句子的主要动词是不是rank
2..surpassed only by heart disease and cancer 在句子中充当什么成分。是不是起修饰作用；如果是，修饰的是什么；从语法角度来说为什么可以用来放在句末做修饰。
请高人指点！跪谢！

个人感觉rank就是句子的主要动词，surpassed only by heart disease and

cancer充当了句末状语，修饰前面ranks 。。。third吧

我觉得应该是这样的，surpassed 是过去分词作状语修饰(主语加动作)也就是(Diabetes ranks...)

啊？为什么我觉得是
（Diabetes together with its serious complications主语）（ surpassed主要动词） only by heart disease and cancer.
然后 ranks as the nation's third leading cause of death是解释diabetes的，因为这个句子主要想说明的是diabetes排第三把

如果surpassed是主要动词，我就觉得前面要加上was 才行，因为后面已经出现by。
