冒号 表示后面的成分是用来解释说明前面的句子。 不可以看作
逗号。
C中when 引导的定语从句中缺少主语。

那为何选it,不选they？？

"they" stands for "the white-tailed deer, the moose, and other species "???

冒号后面的成分是用来解释说明前面的句子， 而前面的主句是在讲 The coyote是一个成功的例子，所以补充部分的主语是 The coyot， 用 it 指代。

楼主，我觉得 ability比 be able to优先，至于it是指代The coyote，有没有人继续回答
