答案是C，主要是没有太看懂prep语法笔记的讲解：
1、D选项说：other用错，没有搭配对象。
这指的是必须one...the other的搭配吗？但是很多句子里面不是都单独用other来排除之前提到过的一个东西吗？
例如 I’m taller than other students in my class.
2、E选项： the possibility of what用法错误，应该用that；
为什么应该用that？

没有说one 和 the other 必须要搭配，但楼主你举得例子是在一句话里面 主语I 和other students 是一个对应的计较关系，但是这个题目不一样，the other infections 与 smallpox 无法对应，因为这句话没有将这两个对象进行比较。
至于the possibility of what是没有语法发错误的，但是在这里用法不对，这里要判断出来还是很难的啊。。
of 往往是表示从属关系的 比如：the man of great intelligence. 是表明great intelligence 是属于这个男的一种特性，但是这个句子表达的是 what they had not previously considered 是对possibility 的一个进一步解释，而非表达从属关系，所以用同位语从句that 来解释是怎么样的possibility 更加准确些！
