Additional school comments: The Kellogg EMBA Program includes three schedules: September in Evanston(twice-monthly), January in Evanston (twice-monthly) and September in Miami (once-monthly). The application deadlines are different, however the curriculum is the same. In Sept. 2011, Kellogg will be adding an additional cohort in Miami. Nearly every single professor authored the text books from which we were learning. They were all pioneers in their field. At times, I was literally in awe... I couldn't believe that I had the opportunity to learn from the best of the best.
An additional benefit is the ability to audit any an all EMBA courses in the future, free of charge&continuous learning is important
The staff at Kellogg provided great support and have organized lot of events to foster interaction and sense of community. The late-night bar at Allen Center provided plenty of opportunity to network, bond with your classmates and to unwind after a rigorous day, especially on Saturday (full day).作者: bigpig 时间: 2011-3-14 23:02
The professors were outstanding. The teaching method was excellent. We were challenged to learn using the Socratic Method. The professors used case studies and challenged the students to use the materials and problem solving methods from class to solve real-life issues. The professors were able to break down complex topics such as economics, international finance, and operations, and make them entertaining as well.
Kellogg's strengths were numerous&from the facilities to teaching staff, the international curriculum to the attention to all facets of the program. From the time I arrived until I left I didn't have to think about the minutiae and could focus on school and learning (both inside and outside the classroom).作者: bigpig 时间: 2011-3-14 23:03
Weaknesses--much like most other business schools, Kellogg is working hard to understand the impact of the recent financial crisis and worked hard to provide new and fresh programming to address what was going on and how to work in this new world we are operating in. I'd like to see them do more of that going forward.
Looking at my class and other classes, the age of the students was increasingly in the early 30s. Also, there were many mid-level to junior-level managers in the program.作者: bigpig 时间: 2011-3-14 23:03
If this is the case overall, you will find more and more people interested in career services. That was totally inadequate. Why not have corporate recruiters get at these guys, especially those who are not sponsoresd? While I don't expect to be treated like the full-time and part-time folks, I am sure the career and recruitment focus can be dialed up a few notches.
Strengths: The EMBA program was given the best faculty the business school had to offer. The instructors were very interested in learning from the students - as most students had considerable industry experience and responsibility. Most of the instructors were academic leaders in thier own fields, as well as consultants to various industries, governments and even board members of major corporations.
Weaknesses: One or two of the instructors were very research-focused&clearly brilliant, but sometimes less able to bring the subject down to the understanding of the students.
The classroom experience would be very hard to improve upon. However, we may have benefitted from slightly more in-depth analysis of cases.作者: bigpig 时间: 2011-3-14 23:03
The strength is their ability to be able to draw out questions and comments and stimulate discussions that maximize our learning. They are able to teach a subject and tie to current events to make the materials more applicable and easier to understand. When dealing with a group of people who have had more than 10 years of working experience, it's extremely important that the professors are in touch with current events and help us use the class materials to understand what's going on with the economy.
The only weakness that I experienced was when a faculty member was new at teaching an EMBA class, without experience dealing with groups of business people/students. The inexperienced EMBA professors tend to not able to explain materials as well as more seasoned professors.作者: bigpig 时间: 2011-3-14 23:04
Strengths: Excellent experience, aware of current trends, many were excellent instructors.
Weaknesses: Felt that some of the material (e.g. cases, readings) that instructors used were dated.
Better management of group interactions in the middle of the program. A lot of attention is paid to establishing and building teams in the beginning, but little attention was given to maintaining the groups that were experiencing difficulties.作者: bigpig 时间: 2011-3-14 23:05
I was most amazed at how the professors consistently found a way to keep everyone interested and engaged in topics where the students have such varied backgrounds. Example: Eliciting invaluable participation from the CPAs and CFOs in an accounting class that included doctors, lawyers and others with little accounting experience. Along those same lines, the professors were always quick to acknowledge that many students can contribute information that the professors cannot, and they set the expectations such that all students felt obligated to contribute in order to aid their classmates. Finally, the professors were amazingly accessible. I spoke to my statistics professor with questions well after midnight on several occasions.
