(A) before Australia was Australia, it was the antipodes (B) before there was Australia, it was the antipodes (C) it was the antipodes that was Australia (D) Australia was what was the antipodes (E) Australia was what had been known as the antipodes 答案是A，我觉得很别扭啊，E为什么不对啊，OG上说E similarly distorts the original meaning, and the past perfect had been is inconsistent with the past tense used to establish a time frame for the rest of the sentence. 偶还是不明白，怎么曲解意思了？时态怎么不对了？

before Australia was Australia, it was the antipodes--前面A指那块地，后面指A指澳洲，it指前面那A,was指在那块地成为澳洲的时候。清楚。
Australia was what had been known as the antipodes--had been在过去之前，过去是什么？原文没有指代。如果硬要说前面的A是澳洲，那应该是 A is what was known as ...但是改变原意。

我认为时词语搭配的问题，E里时Australia 是主语和后面的an obscure and unimaginable place 不能很好的搭配。
