The UIC College of Business Administration(CBA) is a major research-based institution located in the heart of Chicago that cultivates a spirit of entrepreneurship through real-world experience. Our Executives in the Classroom course allows students to meet and learn from global leaders. Our Leadership Academy provides additional opportunities for students to interact with the global leaders in the Chicago area through the Executive’s Club where students attend bi-monthly meetings and have the opportunity to meet and network with top global CEOs and executives. The Academy also sponsors leadership workshops, conferences, and a guest lecture series where authors and relevant guest speakers are invited to discuss current topics. Our Interdisciplinary Product Development course allows students to learn to work more effectively in cross functional teams. The College of Business Administration offers an extensive cooperative and internship program with corporations in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Being located in the midst of one of the most vibrant business districts in the world allows our students to participate in these programs year round instead of just in the summer. The top 100 include Abbott Laboratories, Accenture, Bank of America, Ernst & Young, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Chicago Board of Options, CME, Deloitte, Caterpillar, KPMG, McDonalds, RSM McGladery, UBS Financial Services, Walgreens and many more. Students can receive up to three credit hours during a semester by participating in the BA 289 Internship Course. Over 300 students each year participate in this program which includes employers evaluating student performance while students evaluate the company and complete an essay describing how the internship has influenced their career plans. Students may also receive credit for experiential learning internships through Project Courses. The College of Business has been the recipient of the Illinois Board of Higher Education Cooperative Work Study Grant for eleven years. The Study Abroad Office is committed to making overseas study and international cultural immersion an integral part of the educational experience to better prepare students to meet the challenge and opportunities of a global society. Students may participate in summer, semester, or year long academic experiences by selecting from more than 200 programs in over 50 countries on 6 continents. The university works to create civically engaged students who understand the value of active community service and lifelong learning. Students can engage in organized service efforts ranging from alternative spring break service trips throughout the U.S., to mentoring/tutoring programs and Junior Achievement educational programs with youth from the Chicagoland area through the G.I.V.E. (Get Involved in Volunteer Experience) program. During the fall semester about 25% of the student body participated in community service or volunteer efforts. Many students volunteer with the Junior Achievement Program whose purpose is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics to improve their lives. Junior Achievement accomplishes this by using hands on experiences in the classroom to help young people understand the economics of life by bringing the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential and building skills in job success, professionalism, leadership, and self confidence. The College of Business Undergraduate Career Center provides a full range of career services beginning in freshmen year. Career advisors instruct freshmen through a semester long First Year Experience course, introducing students to campus career preparation initiatives and familiarity with business professions. Students are assigned to a career advisor in freshman year and continue to meet with them through graduation and beyond. These advisors help students with career path planning, vocational assessment, information on job market trends, resume preparation, mock interviews, job and internship search strategies, salary negotiations, and internship credit . To ensure that our students are prepared to enter business professional environments, students attend a career preparation seminar, resume review, and a mock interview session. In addition, corporate partners and alumni provide career advice, resume critiques, and mock interviews. The Undergraduate Business Career Center partners with college departments and student professional organizations to host panel presentations and corporate information sessions. A Corporate Discovery Program provides an opportunity for students to visit local businesses. Alumni often host events providing lunch and a chance to network with business professionals. The opportunity to attend bi-monthly Executives’ Club of Chicago luncheons and breakfasts to assist in honing networking skills is available to business undergraduates through the career center. Career fairs and seminars are regularly held throughout the year offering students internship opportunities and information on permanent placement. Being in Chicago we have so many resources and businesses close by. Local businesses seem to be happy to be involved with the campus and come to speak to students.

The undergraduate business career center does a great job in communicating with students about internships and full-time job opportunities. Professors invite distinguished speakers such as lawyers, renowned company CEOs, and entrepreneurs who share their experience with students.

The UIC business school has the perfect location being right next door to the Chicago Downtown Loop. It has the opportunity to work with some of the biggest corporations in the country. But this opportunity seems wasted as I have yet to notice the school relay any of its possible business contacts to its students. The accounting dept. seems to be the only aspect of the business school that is working hard to court the big firms and provide to them their most qualified students for internships.
Our school prepares us for the business world with the knowledge to keep us going. They provide internships and job fairs to spark our interest. In classes they tie in lessons relating to current events. The one part that I?m disappointed with is that some instructors? communication skills are poor. Meaning that they are aware that English is not their second language and it?s difficult to understand them, making the class a blow off.
